If not, all funds will be reported as income--not cool or fair since the money isn't O's fun money! My God, his father is missing!
Does anyone have any info about how long this takes? I want funds available for my nephew ASAP. I just can't hold for the IRS for 12 hours! I have two very young children!!! JEEZ!
BTW--I don't think anyone here was saying that Steve was capable of crime--his car just matched the description. Remember, plates can come off and be exchanged. It happens in crime ALL THE TIME! Enough said on that topic.
I'm waiting on the paypal account, it should be accessible today.

If you go to the Dept. of Revenue website, you can ask for a tax ID number online. If you want to become incorporated, look up the Secretary of State online for whatever state you live in, and if they can't incorporate you inside 24 hours, take a look at Nevada. Last I knew it was the place to go for quickie incorporation. I don't know what the limits might be on charitable organizations, but a customer service rep at the SOS (whichever you happen to call) should be able to help out. Another option may be, if you or Steve belong to a church, to approach his/your pastor and ask the church to set up an account for this purpose.

i believe it takes quite some time to try to become a charity.... months...
but, as long as you are not calling these donations...and people arent going to try to write them off...why cant people be giving money towards the reimbursement of his expenses?
i dont get it... this isnt income...he isnt earning it...it would go to gas and other expenses.
The money left...now thats where there is a problem.
Perhaps you set up an amt that he feels he needs to cover this week...and once you get that you tell people not to give more?
or the rest goes to the possibility of using helicopters for a search?
look...i am no expert but i am quite sure we must have some accts on this site.
Maybe someone should start a thread for the tax questions.

A co-worker dies of cancer last year. One of the ladies that works in the office was given the families bank account number. Anybody that donated/gave, whatever you call it, gave it to her and she deposited into their account each week. This was to help the family pay bills, buy food, etc.
Why not just do it this way...a family member opens a PayPal account (being done) and anyone wishing to give money paypal the money to her/him. Then withdraw the money directly into the checking account. IF all that can be withdrawn in a 30 month cycle is $500, so be it. The money is there, it's not going anywhere. The only downside to this is Steves family would have to lay out the money from their pocket....which is what their doing anyway.
While I couldn't give much, I would be willing to send a check if I had the address. |

Right ... as long as people aren't trying to claim a charitable deduction, it is simply a person-to-person gift -- limit is $10,000 from any one person/year.

Hi, in answer to a few questions, it can take months to become incorporated and it costs!!! BLAHHH! Screw that. I do belong to a church so I may try that angle. I also doubt that O would receive thousands--more like hundreds. My brother has contributed a generous amount, and I'm sure that others in our combined families will also. We just don't know what to expect in the future, though. O may have to fly back and forth a few times but he's on a time schedule--his wife is 8 months pregnant and in just a few weeks, he will not be able to hop on a plane!
I just really want someone to find my brother in law, I don't care who and I don't care why, we just need him to come home.

PLEASE!!! do NOT jump the gun and over-complicate this. if you want people to be able to help out financially, you can do it very quickly and simply. there are some things you have to keep in mind, though.
1) you cannot open a charity account without establishing a charity first. (banks will not assume responsibility for how the money is actually used. it is TOO complicated and time-consuming to set up a charity. you DO NOT want to set up a corporation--the legal and tax-return ramifications are huge.)
however, someone can open a separate checking account named "so-and-so, for steve davidson".
2) individuals can give up to $11,000 a year without having to report it on their taxes. even if you give more, there is no penalty for giving. it is simply counted towards the lifetime maximum you can give (and if you go over that, it is taxed to your estate after you die).
3) individuals can receive unlimited gifts without having to pay taxes. however, if they receive more than $11,000 from any one person, they have to report it as a gift (see #2 above).
4) contributions to causes such as this are GIFTS, NOT donations. anyone contributing will NOT be able to take it off their taxes.
i know some others may have already responded, so maybe this is just a summary of what others have said. all the same, keep this part of it simple so the primary focus can be kept on finding steve! |

Okay, let's keep this simple! I have established a Paypal account. I am waiting for account verification. The email address is:
steveismissing@gmail.com
All funds deposited here will go to my nephew to help with expenses related to Steve's status. This is not a reward account, not a charity, not an organization, not a business, just an account for friends and family to help my nephews with expenses related to finding their father. Orion (the one in AZ right now) will be the primary 'money' person--he will make all the decisions. I'm just his auntie who is helping out!
Orion will not misuse funds--he is reliable, responsible and honest.

AFAIK regarding PayPal:
You can only transfer funds up to $500 a month for goods. If donors remember to mark that the money is for "services", you will be able to transfer unlimited funds from your PayPal account.
Hope this helps...

I'm just not thinking clearly--the account is established and ready to go. Money can go in just not out right now.
I'm living on coffee and chocolate right now.
