I thought I knew p/shop. Apparently not so.
Am I not able to add layers (adjustment layers) when working with a TIFF file? I have converted some RAW files to TIFF, then when I go to open them, ALL of the options under the Layers menu tab are darkened... I can't do anything.
Is this normal? Do I have to save it as JPEG before this? |

Sounds like your image may not be RGB or CMYK. Have you checked this? It's not normal since you can save a TIFF with layers in Photoshop 7.

This is a question I'd like answered, too.
With TIFF files, I need to convert them into 8-bit from 16-bit before I can photoshop them. Is there no way to retain the 16-bit depth while working in photoshop?

I'm using 5.5 by the way.
on top of the image window it reads RGB.
It wasn't much of an issue, but now I can't save the TIFFs as a JPG when I'm done.. |

Can you e-mail one of the files to me? I'll have a look at it:
cyberpix@homeland.plus.com
You can reduce the file size for the test or zip it if you like.

I just realised that you may have the image at 16bit. This will prevent you adding layers. Try converting it to 8bit. |

When you are WORKING WITH files, save them in "native" Photoshop format, which should support all of the features. When you are DONE, save a copy as a TIFF, flattening the layers.
TIFF is a format designed to be placed into other documents and printed, not particularly for editing. |

This was my original question. Why can't photoshop work with 16bit?
