What is the best 'easy' editing software. I have used primarily photoshop however i am wanting to get my mom started on a little editing (croping, contrast, saturation, and perhaps changing the image size). Photoshop is too steep a learning curve I think. Does picassa have these options? other good options?

ACDSee Pro is really easy. In fact I had it on my parents computer to help organize their stuff for, and one day I came home and my mom said she had edited her photos from a recent trip. She opened up ACDSee on accident,(it was the first program listed when she right clicked) and then just kept working away. It has all the basics your looking for. I didn't show her anything at all. And lets just say my mom is not so computer savvy, I was shocked.

Picasa rocks! It can "almost" do anything but for curves and local editing. And best of all- IT IS SIMPLE! And BY DEFAULT it does not do any changes to original photo and saves the changes in .ini file so there is no chance of losing or altering original photos (during editing).
Basic things it can do - crop, contrast, fill light, b/w, saturation, sharpening (not too good at this one though), filtered b/w, glow filter color temperature, save for web etc etc....
I use it 90% of the time and use photoshop only when I need to do local editing or some extremen processing.

For the simple adjustments you mentioned above, I'd recommend IrfanView (www.irfanview.com) which is also freeware for non-commercial use. It has a very clean and simple interface so your mom should be able to catch up fast :) |

Errr...I don't use ACDSee but didn't I read on another thread that it alters your EXIF? I might be wrong...but just in case I thought I would mention it for the sake of your DPC entries.

Yes it does do this if your going to be enter challenges so beware. But if your just needing something to edit for family prints or basic editing where exif data is not really important, I think this works well.

Was just suggesting as per his requirements. Actually I find Irfanview's cropping tool to be better than Photoshop CS's! Try it :) |

I have. Been using Irfanview for nearly a decade - it just keeps getting better too. The editing capbilities are actually amazing, and can do all that was requested, in addition to so very much more.
