I just saw another thread from larryslights (//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=426205) that put what I want to know so perfectly that I'm going to quote it:

"I would never complain about a [6.1] score, but I honestly had a feeling and a hope that this would score slightly higher. The comments were pleasant, but didn't really offer much critique.

So tell me, if I had to do it over again, what would I need to do to make this a 7.0 photo? Can it be a 7.0 photo?"

I'm genuinely happy with my result. It's a personal best by a decent margin, the comments I got were uniformly positive, and it got loads of high scores. Oh, and it's the best taken so far with the Canon A620. :)

But can anyone help me take my personal best and do it even better next time? When Take 2 rolls around again, I want to be ready!

Thanks!

Edited to note that a few commenters did make some suggestions (e.g., e301), but there's probably much more I can do.

I simply used Channels and the Selective Color option under adjustments in PS.

For a BW to be quite effective, a wide tonal range is almost necessary. Look at Ed Clarke and Zuezen's imagery. Stunning masterpieces in BW.

you mention in your comments that you didn't go wide open because you wanted some DOF, and that you had to brace yourself against a railing.

well, I gave you a 6 because your shot isn't sharp enough. I'd say shooting with a tripod at f/8 would have made a huge difference.

Technically, I feel that this is a good shot. The composition is very well "precise".

However, got kinda giddy after staring at it for a while..
Just kidding.. :)

My preference would be a higher constrast shot.. considering it's a B/W...

Hope this helps..

Rikki's edit is a good direction to go with this.

hey! also I just learned that using Adjustments -> gradient map -> click on the black to white color will give you a super nice BW pic, you might try that too

I would have knocked a point or two off because the camera's been tilted .... but that's just a pet peeve. In my opinion it rarely adds to a picture, but I stress that is only my view. Otherwise, sharper and a little more depth of field would have improved it for me. But still, good shot despite my criticisms.

a little crisper, and definitely more contrast. but a very nice image.

I created a high contrast version:

Not sure whether I like it better. Is that taking it too far?
