I'm considering a trip to Yellowstone National Park and I'm wondering which airport is the best to fly into for the best scenic drive to Yellowstone.
I've searched numerous other threads, but none so far have mentioned the spectacular drive that I have heard about.
While we're at it, how about some must-see's and thing's to do that you all think are winners.
Thanks a lot. |

Hey, I live in Cody, Wyoming ( It's about 52 miles from the East entrence into Yellowstone). One airport you may like to fly into is Yellowstone Regional Airport, just outside of Cody. From Cody there are several different drives to the park. My recomondation would be to take Cheif Joseph Senic Highway. It takes a bit longer to get to the park, but it is a great drive. Just the other day I was driving along and saw a grizzly bear...from a distance. You can also take the North Fork through the Shoshone Forest, it's a faster drive, but not as senic.

Fly into Bozeman and enter the north entrance into Yellowstone. Very nice drive and nice introduction to Montana. As for other things, if you like Caverns, be sure to see the Lewis and Clark Caverns, a great site to see and also depending the amount of time you want to spend, Custer Battle Field and of course in the Northwest corner of Montana you have Flathead Lake (be sure to take a boat ride out) and Glacier National Park, Highway to the Sun is spectacular!
If you like history and ghost towns be sure to hit Virginia City and Nevada City. Butte has a nice Ghost Town behind the college and several things to see there, Clark Mansion, Art Chateau, Berkely Pit, all uptown and if you are in Butte you MUST, JUST MUST eat at the Bonanza Freeze on Montana Street, best cheesburgers and shakes anywhere!
The drive from Butte to Missoula is very nice but even nicer if you take the back road and land in Hamilton. If you decide you want to do that, let me know and I can get you directions, might even get you a free drink while you're at it. :) I have family there in Montana. :)

I'm flying into Jackson Wy on Aug 1 and driving north to Yellowstone through the Grand Teton National Park. Looks like beautiful mountain country. Not sure if thats what you are thinking of. |

The drive through the Tetons looked like the best drive, at least by looking at the map. But, Neuferland seems to think that the best drive is from the north on the back roads through Hamilton.
I usually go with locals information, but I still have a lot of research to do.
Thanks for the replies everybody. |

Fly into Billings and take the Beartooth Highway to the northeast entrance. I've driven into Yellowstone from every entrance and this is by far the most scenic and interesting drive. It's closed in the winter though because it's under 20 feet of snow. |
