I ran across this on another site I frequent...

Interesting read on ebay that states a high number of Sandisk CF sold on eBay is counterfiet.

Beware of Fake SanDisk CF

They also have articles on flash drives and the likes.

That reminds me: Lexar just did a recall on several of their CF cards. You guys should check the serial #s on any Lexar cards in your bags.

Lexar 80X Professional series CF cards with the following last four digits A4B6 or 9171 it is recommend you contact Lexar

There was a recent thread over at DPReview that I can't find at the moment... several posters had been shipped fake Sandisk cards purchased on ebay. In a couple cases they were unaware that their cards were not genuine until long after their purchase when they inspected them after reading online info on how to spot the fakes.
Bottom line, if you purchase a card off of ebay, make sure the seller is a reputable business.

Thnx for the info - just checked and mine all conform to the 'original product' spec. Worthwhile checking though

Maybe the fakes are of pretty good quality? Counterfiets usually show up when a product is past the point of being on the cutting edge of technology but the brand name sellers are still charging high prices for it.

I bought a real Sandisk CF from Amazon and a few weeks later bought another from someone on Pricegrabber.com. The one from Pricegrabber was a blatant fake. Man, you could tell it a mile away but only because I knew I had a real one from Amazon. Luckily, I contacted the guy and he gave me a full refund immediately. The fake was nowhere near as fast and it was half the weight of the genuine card.

Something else I learned was NEVER to pay with your bank account through Paypal. ALWAYS pay with your credit card. (Unless you know the seller). If you use your bank account, you are out of luck. Paypal does not protect the buyer AT ALL unless it was an ebay transaction. Your credit card company will help you if there is a problem but Paypal will never help you.
