This kind of events show quite clearly that the illusion of freedom we have is getting weaker and weaker:

I am so sad to hear this. It sounds like a great loss for Sweden. The people of Canada surely extend their sympathies to the citizens of Sweden all over the world.
Take heart and remember her.

Not only did we lose our foreign minister today. Also, a five-year old girl was stabbed to death at a daycare center, and a 16-year old missing girl was found dead.
Not a very pleasant day :(

Here in Los Angeles just 2 days ago, 3 high-school students were shot while waiting for a bus after school to go home. All were seriously injured. No one was caught yet. It's a sad world sometimes.

What does this have to do with freedom? |

this should probably be in the rant forum, but freedom includes the ability to go where you want, when you want, think what you want and associate with whom you want. If you are afraid of being hurt or killed, then you are not free because you cannot do those things.

We have had a very bad day here in Sweden today. Our Foreign Minister was SO loved. Not just in Sweden but in all Europe. She was always talking about freedom and what kind of life we want. Therefor she never had a lifeguard when she was meeting people in the street. We´re gonna miss her very much. I really can´t come up with anything meaningful for todays challenge on a day like this. |

Unfortunately, the reality is that freedom is always a balancing act. What you're describing is maybe more properly labeled "security". There's a famous quote by Benjamin Franklin that goes something like "those who would trade freedom for security deserve neither". The only way that a government can gaurantee you freedom from the fear of being hurt or killed is by adopting a total police state. The problem then, of course, is that you no longer fear the thugs on the street, you fear the thugs in the government.
While the loss of Ms. Lindh is sad and discouraging, maybe we can all take heart in the thought that, for the most part, our democratic societies have been relatively free of this kind of violence. The vast majority of the time we've enjoyed peaceful debate and transitions of power. The fact that this kind of thing is rare enough for us to be shocked by is something that, when taken in perspective, we can take a tiny bit of comfort in. There have been and still are countries and societies where this is the norm, not the exception. |

I'm sorry for you, and the family of Anna Lindh, and all people in Sweden for the loss of the Foreign Minister. But I hope that you keep on electing people like her - she was an inspiration.

I think it was Jefferson who said "Sir, your freedom to swing your fist stops at my nose." |

The reason it relates to freedom, is that we shouldn't have to live in fear that our lives could be taken by another human at any second. |

Hmmm, it's amazing that nobody in the entire shopping center could provide a description of the murderer other than "a tall guy wearing a hat".
But this kind of thing is the price we pay for being free. This wouldn't happen in a dictatorship because anyone foolish enough to try would be executed on the spot. So in that light, are those people (who live under a dictatorship) MORE free then those who don't? I don't think so. Basically my point is, that in this particular case, there's a price you pay for freedom which is that lunatics have access to public officals much more then they would in a controlled society.
