how interesting, this thread...

i actually deleted a handful of photos i shot yesterday because i didn't have time to argue with someone who had a badge and an attitude. had i not been pressed for time, i probably would have insisted on making a day of it, working my way up the chain until i could find someone with some sense to explain "the law" to me without mumbling "9/11"...

here's one of the one's i didn't delete.

Are those benches? Unreal.

If it's any consolation, I asked the guys at my local fire station if it would be any problem to drop by and take some pictures, mentioning this burgeoning photo-paranoia on the part of public entities ... their response was "come on down!"

I think a lot of these problems can be avoided by finding the guard and explaining what you're going to be doing first ... give them a business card and a copy of Your Rights As A Photographer.

actually, that's pretty much what i did when shannon and i were shooting at grand central station the other day. i found a cop and shot a killer portrait of him (which i'm emailing him). we talked a bit, and i knew i had an ally, should anything have come up.

on the other hand, when jpr and i were out yesterday afternoon, we came across these benches and i started shooting without realizing just where i was...duh, stupid me, to assume i could shoot out in front of a f***ral building.

Hah! One more sign of separated-at-birth! I actually did that for both the Chrome and the Industrial challenges; went to the fire station, chatted up the people there,a nd they let me onto the property to shoot. Go figure...
