Took the Girl Scouts hiking today at Burke Lake in Fairfax, VA, USA.
This large butterfly landed near us while were were resting and we all started shooting.
The focus isn't perfect, and I need to burn the background, but I'm pretty happy with the photos!
Everyone was guessing it was a monarch butterfly, but the pics I've found online all show spots along the wings' edges, unlike this pattern.
It was probably 3 inches tall from its legs to its wingtips.
Here are two shots. I love the second one - the detail and the hairs are cool, and I'm really impressed with the A620's macro:

I believe that is a Tiger Swallowtail.

From what I can derive of the overall pattern, I agree, I think it is a Tiger Swallowtail or the Pterourus glaucus. Here is a helpful link.
