Are those notebooks they have at like circuit city / best buy and so on for $500 any good?
specs:
Toshiba Satellite Notebook PC
Intel Celeron M 410 1.5 Mhz
15.4" WXGA widescreen
512 MB DDR2 533 Mhz SDRAM
80GB HD
CD-RW/DVD-ROM (There is one with CD/DVD-RW for a bit more)
Integrated 802.11g/b wireless technology
ATI Radeon graphics...
I mean I'm not in need of blazing speed, just something to browse the internet, maybe download some photos to if I'm on vacation, and so on.
I just don't want to get something that is COMPLETE garbage. My computer now only had 256 MB RAM when I first got it and I was happy with it. I got 1GB RAM for free, which is the only reason I upgraded it at all.

Based on what you want to do you could get a second hand notebook produced ten years ago and you'd be fine. |

LOL yeah but I mean I *expect* the computer to be somewhat quick. I can't be waiting around all day for it to load/etc. And I'd expect the battery to be capable of lasting a good 4-8 hours or so.
Is there a connection on those things for a vehicle 12V outlet?
I'd also like the possibility of adding in a USB GPS system in the future...so I definately want something that has some USB ports.

ok cool...
one more question...
Can someone explain to me how the 'wireless internet' works?
I'm assuming I'd need a router hooked up to my cable modem in order for it to work, right? I can't just turn the computer on anywhere and be on the internet?
What about that 'free wireless internet' they offer in hotels...how does the notebook computer recieve the signal? Is there something I have to plug in?
Anyone have a link where this is all explained...I feel like an idiot.

A lot of the latest laptops have 802.11g (commonly known as wi-fi) built-in.
If you want to use it at home on your current internet connection you'll need a wireless router.
And a lot of hotels and places do wi-fi hotspots. It operates on the same principle as the one you use at home - your laptop detects the wi-fi networks in range, and you just connect/log-on.
Here's a ton of stuff about wi-fi;
