Through a link in another thread, I discovered FixNEF, a tiny little program for correcting white balance in Nikon RAW images. What this does is take the gray point settings from Nikon Capture and apply it directly to the image. This prevents color clipping in cases where you're doing extreme white balance correction. Apparently, Nikon Capture applies the correction to the already applied white balance settings embedded in the file, instead of applying them directly to the RAW data.
Here are some pictures to show you the results:
 this is the original image (a lamp with a white cloth cover)
 this is after gray point correction in Capture (see the cyan halo around the light bulb?)
 and this is with the exact same WB correction parameters, but now directly applied through FixNEF
For completeness, here's a picture with the white balance set in camera using the PRE setting:
I think the one using PRE setting gives the most neutral result, but it's curious to see the difference between FixNEF and Capture. Sure worth keeping this little program for those extreme situations where you forgot to (or couldn't) use PRE white balancing. |

| Capture 4.4.0, that should be the last version before Capture NX came out. |
