Isn't the Nikon D200 a 10.2mp?
I'm not shopping right now, nor will I be in the near future, but when I do upgrade next fall it will probably be a Nikon. Just though a 10.2mp dSRL for around 900 sounded like a good deal. I don't know anything about sony cameras. |

Here is the DPReview preview of the Sony A100 due out sometime soon.
It's got some good looking features, notably body-integrated anti-shake (not in the lens, so every lens can be an anti-shake lens) which doubles as a dust-reduction system (the only other company to date to have one on a DSLR beside Olympus), lots of lenses available, and unlike most every other Sony, it doesn't require Memory Sticks.
Looks like it could be a good camera. Let's hope for the best.

The reason I posted about the NEW Nikon, is because it is expected to be a replacement for the D70s which would make it around the same price as the A100. Here's to hoping!

aaaaah gotcha. So they are releasing a cheaper 10.2 then the D200? Is that what you are saying?

Considering they'd be breaking NDA's to do that, I think you probably mean the D200. This is probably something like a D80 (D75?) Who knows.
Probably 3fps, no synch port, less buttons a whistles and dials, Non-sealed body that's not as rugged, 30-1/4000, smaller metering ccd, smaller buffer, smaller viewfinder, smaller smaller smaller. until you get to the 10.2mp, it'll be just like the D70.
Without the body integral antishake and dust removal, and the rumored price of $1200 US body only (possibly kit, but still), this may be a pathetic effort from Nikon to answer Sony. The only thing they will have going for them is the fact that we already have lenses, and unless we want to buy a whole new set... oi.
We can almost be guaranteed that Sony didn't license the HDR tech to them either.

I don't know what NDA's are, but they're on display in the camera stores here in Japan, along with the new Panasonic. |

The new Nikon is the D2XS, based on the high-end D2X. It is definitely not an inexpensive camera, and is likely directed at pros. The suggested price is 5,450.95 (Canadian) versus 2,069.95 for the D200 and 4,500.00 for the D2X. Full specs. |

Besides the D2Xs Nikon is releasing another body.
Personally I don't care about either the Sony or the Nikon. I will wait with buying a new camera until the manufactures have put the new foveon-like sensors (both Fuji and Canon have their own patents on this) in production and use those in the cameras.

Neat Stuff. but I'd rather have more resolution sooner than later myself.

So is the new Nikon really NOT an answer to Sony? I mean at that price you certianly can't compare the two. We're talking roughly 5,000 dollars difference here. THe sony is said to go for around 900.

No, Louis hasn't been keeping up. It's most likely a D70 replacement/ A100 competitor.

so a 10.2mp Nikon for around the same price as the Sony then. Wonder if it would be worth selling my Olympus outfit for. COuld at least buy more lenses then. I did notice that the Sony had a 300mm lens for around 500, beats the 6k price of the 300mm for the Olympus lol. |

The Sony also takes Minolta lenses, so you don't have to stick with the new ones (or are they rebranded...I'm not sure) that are coming out with the camera.
As far as the 4:3 system on your E-500, there are not a lot of lenses available yet, but with Panasonic joining in, and 3rd party lenses available, it won't be long before you can get what you want at the prices you want.
I don't see the Sony 300mm for approx $500. I see a f2.8 for $6,000, and a f5.6 zoom for $230. The Olympus 4:3 150mm f2.8 lists at $2200. It gets confusing with 4:3 lenses since some manufacturers (like Olympus) list the actual focal length (the 150mm Olympus lens has a 300mm equivilant in 35mm) but others (like Sigma) list the 35mm equivilant. It's tricky since sometimes you multiply by two, sometimes you don't. It's also deceptive, since if you don't know what you're buying, you could be off by a factor of 2.

If you're looking for a long telephoto bear in mind that Sigma is releasing a 4/3rds version of their 50-500mm lens in the very near future. A lens such as this will give you more reach on a 4/3rds cam with its 2x crop factor than other manufacturers offerings. I believe I heard it'll cost in the $1000 range.

I just happened to go to a department store this afternoon and wandered by the camera store. Its camera are behind glass, but at other stores there are sample camera you can play around with.
And, with a 3 year warranty and lens kit, the total price is ¥119,800.

this is the lens I was referring to that I saw
lens
I can buy an adapter so I can use other lenses on my Oly, but I've heard I'll lose quality that way. I'm fine with just the 2 lenses I have, but who doesn't want more lenses? lol Really though the 2 I have are perfect for what I've done thus far.
