I've been using Picasa for a few weeks now, and just today, it's screwed up all it's thumbnails. All the thumbnails are wrong - click on a thumbnail, and a different picture comes up. It seems to have affected every directory, including all my favourites tags. Also, all the labels and editing has shifted along with the photos, so where I had edited one photo, it's shifted the editing to another photo, lost my labels, and generally stuffed everything.

1) Does this happen often with Picasa?

2) Anyone know how to recover from this? I've restarted and rebooted, and I'm slowly refreshing thumbnails directory by directory, and manually fixing some things up when they don't come back right, but with 2 years of photos, I really don't know if it's worth it. It's really stuffed. I think if there's no way to fix it easily, I'll throw Picasa in the bin.

Well, the good thing about picasa is that it actually does not work on original photos and writes the changes, you do to photo, on .ini file. Thus your originals are always safe till you export the changes to new file (which makes another copy with changes imposed).

Now coming to problem - I noticed it once but it went away after I rebooted the system. You can try to remove the picture folders from "folder manager" and then add them again. This is "equivalent" to refreshing thumbnails and is much faster.

I store my shots in My Pictures, and Picasa imports them automatically. I find Picasa useful when I need to browse all my shots, it is faster than browsing them in Photoshop.
The tumbnail-problem you describe has turned once or twice, but it "goes away", just reboot.
I have tried their back-up once and that did not work properly. I did a complete back-up on dvd's when I reformatted my hard-drive and I was not able to access all the shots. Now I use my other hard-drive for back-up.

Well, after several reboots, and lots of refreshing, the problem is still there. Refreshing the thumbnails does not refresh rotation of the thumbnails. The only way to get the edits back is to cancel all the directories out of picasa, and then readd them. All my categories listings and favourites tags disappear, so it's still pretty bad.

I will look around for something a bit better than Picasa. It's a pity, because Picasa is very easy to use, and has some nice features. If only it was reliable.

Dude, I've had Picasa for two years, and I've never encountered that.
