What is the opinion on taking a photo for a challenge with a timer? All the planning for a good shot (i.e. framing, lighting, etc.) still has to be thought out, so is it okay to submit a picture that was taken with a timer instead of with your finger?

Absolutely no problem with using a camera timer. A lot of self portraits are taken that way. It's also a great way to reduce camera shake (when set up on a tripod).

When possible and shooting from a tripod (like Jacko mentioned), I use the 2 second timer when the shutter speed is 1/30 of a second or less. Obviously it's not always practical to do this. Example, in this shot the camera was hand held, at 1/20 of a second, and in windy conditions. Got lucky I guess :)
