Seriously, I am so not getting my work done these days. I spent 3+ hours on a challenge entry this morning, and it STILL doesn't look that great. At what point do I just accept my mediocrity, and give up? How long do you guys usually spend on challenge entries?
I really need to cut back, or there's going to be a major mutiny at my house.

but dang it! I'm tired of that 4.7-5.2 range that I seem to be stuck in........

Dibs on the lights.... ok just kidding. (soft voice keeps repeating..... give Ray the lights... in a "Not so subliminal mode")

Look on the bright side of things... chances are you will get what you consider a good score real soon. Some artists had to wait till they were dead before people recognized their talents.

Have fun, enjoy your photography.

I spent all week looking for a great perspective shot, 3+ hours downtown, about an hour messing around at work off and on, and 2+ hours driving around the countryside looking for that perfect spot where you could see the road disappearing on the horizon. Trust me, that was not easy in Kansas. It's hard to find a spot on the road that is high enough above the rest to get a really great veiw out of it.

So, I guess about 6 hours for something ribbon or top 10 quality. And that was just getting a shot. I only had 20 minutes to convert from RAW, and get it edited in PS, and then uploaded to DPC ;)

My current Abstract Food entry is in the 5.9 range. I spent 10 mintues or so shooting the idea, and 10-15 minutes editing it.

Don't forget that you posted a top ten less than a month ago. Don't give up!

It's not usually how much time you spend, but mostly what you do in that time. If you know what you are doing, you can do something great in less time. I was expecting a really bad outcome for this, cause I spent only 15 minutes on it, including editing, but it averaged 5.1 hehe. Not bad for 15 minutes of work. I say keep at it. Practice makes perfect. Your portfolio is impressive. It also has to do with the voters and what they think is good ;-)

I'll trade you my lights for that cute macro lens you were letting me play with the other day... I'm seriously lusting after one of those now. Of course then I'd go from getting almost nothing done each day, to getting absolutely nothing done.

Yeah, but see, Leroy, the problem is, I can't even get INTO the laundry room now, because the laundry is piled so high. My poor kiddies are running around either naked or in dirty clothes, and I'm still trying to get that perfect shot... (well, actually, right now I'm wasting time reading the forums). Please pass some self control this way.

Yeah, today I've told someone how to shoot in a church and how to evacuate poo from a non-functioning toilet. Where else can you get that kind of knowledge for free?

I'm certainly not one to listen to for advice towards shooting high-scoring shots, but I'll throw in my $.02. :) For me, it really varies from week to week. As far as shooting goes, it can range from a whole week of experiments to less than an hour. As far as thinking about the challenges, I personally never stop. ;) I always have weird ideas for entries flying around in my head. There have been a couple challenges when I just "knew" immediately what I was going to shoot, but there are others that took my entire week to think of a half-way decent idea. My advice is to just keep shooting! You have some great stuff and multiple scores in the 6's - don't give up! :D
