Bad news... I don't know how bad.

I screwed my camera!! I think, I stripped the thread inside the tripod mount. Is the mount easily replacable? How much?

Take it to a camera shop, they should be able to drill it out and put a helicoil in it. Its not as bad as you think.

Maybe $20 at the very most. If they cant do it, I am sure they will know someone who can. If you are handy with tools, you could do it. Need a tap and die set though.

If it's really badly stripped. See if you can go to 3/8" That's another common size in tripod mounts. Strong like bull too!

It's pretty easy to get a 1/4" to 3/8" adaptor for your old tripod too..

Still not able to fix my camera. I guess, I am not handy with tools. Tried calling local camera stores, no help. Called canon service. I have to send camera to the canon service center in NJ, which means I will be without camera for 6-8 weeks!! Can't imagine.

Anyone aware of any Camera Shop in Chicago can help me?

You may be able to find a local machine shop to insert a heli-coil. I'd be concerned about the cleanliness of the place though (there may be lots of grease on some parts). Also try and find one that works on delicate items--some shops specialize in truck parts and large machines, others do smaller things.

Think hard about this--you risk ruining a working camera if the wrong guy messes up. You can look at the lack of a tripod socket as an excuse to upgrade :-)

Actually, upgrading may be an option. If you ebay your camera as-is, there may be a lot of people who don't care about using a tripod. Add the money you'd pay to Canon, and you may be close to the price of an XTi
