I had to photograph a Barrel Racing event a week ago. The day before was cancelled due to weather and the morning that I had to photograph them the arena was under water.

As you can see -


With much trepidation the event went ahead. As you know the object is to race into the arena on horseback and ride in a three leaf clover pattern around three barrels and ride out again in the fastest times possible. With the muddy arena they were still managing times of 14 to 16 seconds. So you can imagine the mud that was flying. I even copped some mud on my lens during it.

For each ride I managed to shoot about 4 frames for each barrel and the final sprint home. Each round involved 4 different zooms and shutter speeds. Completely handheld in terrible light I managed to get the job done with about 12 good frames per run.

I put together a slideshow of the event for anyone that is interested. Please give it time to download.

Cool beans Judi!! JP likes the barrel races ... times must have been slow in the mud?

Where's the mud wrestling??? Oh, it's horses... :P

Looks dangerous. Great shots though, I especially like the exhausted one at the end.

Thanks Jp and Dan. They were getting times of around 14 to 16 seconds in the mud. And that sleepy shot at the end was actually taken before they started. Most of them had been up all night partying so there were a few hangovers...lmao!!

Those are fantastic shots Judi! Just great captures. My little sister is a barrel racer I am gonna send her this link she will love it.

Thanks Erick...I love the sport and will be photographing for them again.
