...or it's because I am getting too many 4s and 5s so I think that way.

I checked the winners votes, and they most likely low 7 and upper 6s. That makes low 5s and upper 4s middle class work!!!

what is your view on this?

It depends on what you're looking for. I'm happy with that, but that's me. I've never gotten to 6.

IN my first challenge, I got a 5.5 so I'm pretending it is a FABULOUS score!!! haha.

personally, my main goal at present is to try to keep pushing my average score upwards. so, for me, scores in the high 5's are satisfactory. i guess we all look at this issue differently.

so far it seems like varies per person...

I think about 5 (-+ 0.5) should consider middle range work.

I think everyone wants to do atleast as well if not better than their average. Once you make a 5, its hard to take a 4. Once you hit a 6, 5 doesn't look so good. And once you hit 7... you'll never be happy again!!

I would just strive to improve each week...better your best...and above all have fun...and learn

This is a tricky question. How do you answer this without insulting someone in the process?

The politically correct thing to say would be "As long as you are happy the score doesn't matter" And that would actually be correct to a certain degree becasue happy is relevant.

But, unfortunately, that probably doesn't help most people.

Many people measure their skill and personal progress here by their numerical average and their ribbons and how they compare to others here that have similar equipment and time spent in photography. I would say for those people, High 4's to low 5's are not going to be good enough. They are competetive and their goal is to figure out the DPC voter and appease them. Does this describe you?

Others here have other goals that are their own and ..to be honest...just as valid and do not depend on their DPC score to validate their participation. Those desires are too numerous to mention.

For me? Depends on when you ask me :-D I do admit that I expect a lot from me because I am experienced and I don't have any excuses. I have great equipment, I know how to use it and I have spent enough time here at DPC to know what scores well. However, I work a lot and sometimes I just am not motivated enough to pay attention to the details that make a winning photo here. Attention to detail will make your scores a lot better even when the "muse" fails you.

Sometimes "knowing" why you score the way you do helps you determine if you are "O.K." with it.

EDIT....After reading this line...I laughed out loud but decided to leave it as is. Freudian slip.... "I have great equipment, I know how to use it" >:-D

It is all in the way you look at it. In my opinion (and it's only mine), the highest scoring photos are around 7 to 7.5, so I believe average is around 3.75. I know we are using a scale of 1 to 10, but since no one has ever gotten a perfect 10 or really even close to it, then I'm using the averages that the top scoring people are really getting. So, in my book a 5 is above average. Maybe it's my justification to continue here. But it works for me. I realize I'm competing against professionals, so I really don't ever expect to win a ribbon. If I ever do it will be a fluke. But I am always happy when I get above a 5.

I look at the curve. I count the number of voters who scored me 7 or above. If I pleased a reasonable number of people, then the score doesn't matter. I also like to get some votes on the low end, because then I know my shot was edgy enough to turn some people off. Often I get a big pile of fives and no favorites. I hate that. If I get favorites, then I don't care about scores at all.

endeavor to beat your average

What I find funny about this site is this. In school if you were to recieve a 70% grade that would barely be a passing grade. Yet here 7.0 the equivilent is fantastic. So if you make that comparison getting through school with a c- grade would get you top honors here on DPC. Thats just crazy isnt it. For me one of my goals is to get my scores scoring close or over 6 each time I enter a challenge. And to keep my average recieved score above 5.5. So a score below that to me means I havent done my job, which seems to be happening alot latley!

Just to be picky, I'll note that 5.5 (not 5) is actually in the middle when using a 1-10 scale.

I actually see it 7-2 range more than 10-1 range... using the overall winners. But I thin doesn't make too much of a difference.

In my way of thinking, most here are competent photographers. This group is made of people who are fairly confident in their ability to take a picture.

I always strive to be above average in this group, and then increase my mid-percentile. The 50th percentile can range within the low to mid 5's. Currently, my goal is to stay above the 70th percentile on all entries. Obviously, I don't do that, but that is my mid-point.

This way, I'm keeping track of the variables. Decide what your goal is as a percentile rank and look at that. It will help determine what is "average" for that particular challenge, and allow you to compare yourself to the average.

I understand people's argument of "whatever makes you happy" thinking...

But, everything has an handle, a relative point to move up or down, so actually we could see the growth or failure, actually feel the change better.

I am not sure if I am making myself clear...

In DPC case, I think I was asking myself, middle range instead of being 5, which is within 10 and 1, it's actually less than 5, which makes some people (maybe like myself) happier with the scores... which it should.
