You are talking about your computer's "hard drive" aren't you? Just curious about the rolling on the floor naked thing.

Failing in what kind of way? Crunchy Noises or Lots of activity and slowing?

Win9x/WinXP:

Start > My Computer > Right-Click on your disk > Choose Properties > Tools tab > Check Now... button > Select both Check Boxes > Start...

It will tell you that it can't perform the action and ask if you would like to schedule checkdisk at the next reboot... Select Yes

Reboot

It will go through a low level check before launching Windows that will fix indexes and mark bad blocks as unusable etc. Depending on the Size of your disk and problems encountered this could take from 20 minutes to an hour.

Luckily it's my work PC, which I keep fairly religiuosly backed up, so it's just a bummer. I'll have a new hd duplicated shortly. The failing drive has the C partition on it, pfft.

I hope I'm right & it's the hd failing, rather than some esoteric software problem. But hey, I'm never wrong. [ Still waiting for DPC to fix that router ;-) ]

I should probably do a backup of my laptop sometime.

Thanks, done that a few times already. I get more concerned when it decides to chkdsk on its own after reboots. :-)

Isn't that a normal part of everyone's workday?

Daisy, Daisy,
Give me your answer do!
I'm half crazy,
All for the love of you!
It won't be a stylish marriage,
I can't afford a carriage
But you'll look sweet upon the seat
Of a bicycle made for two.

(for all you 2001 / Kubrick fans out there)..

"rolling around on the floor naked" or "blackmail"?

You know, it might not be the hard drive at all. Have you checked the router?

LOL! Of course, the router is always the first thing I check. In fact, the refridgerator stopped working the other day. I fixed it by rebooting the router. :-P

Note to self:

After imaging a new hard drive for a store-bought PC, it may not boot because the freaks put an extra, hidden system partition on their hard drive to save money printing CDs. So you have to edit the boot.ini to boot from partition 1, not 2 as the freaks made it. Grrrr.

Oh ya, it's 8:30pm and I'm still at work. >:-(
