OK...I'm in 2 challenges right now. These are the first 2 that I've entered. I've decided not to vote or rate because:

a. I just started on digital photography
b. I want to find out what the voters here tend to lean toward
c. I'm not that great technically.

I do plan on voting in the next set of challenges.

What are your opinions?

you are your own person, do whatever you want, no one should critize you for what you decide to do,

and thanks for entering the challenge,

I would suggest you DO vote in the challenges you're in. Why? Looking at the photos and seeing what you like or don't like will teach you a lot about what YOU want to look for when you go out and shoot.

before you vote.. check your ears please... if they are pointy, you should not vote at all :P

Hey... just asking, calm down.

VOTE, VOTE, VOTE. Jump right in. I actually started voting before I started doing challenges, but hey go for it.

a) Doesn't matter. Vote what you feel/like.
b) Don't worry about them to much.
c) Doesn't matter. Vote what you feel/like.

I'm going to agree with Deb because she's smart (albeit carrying a canon).

Vote, comment, explore ... doing these are the first step towards enlightenment - you learn most by doing and critiquing.

Nope, no pointy ears...and I like what I like and I know what I like.

If you insist on not voting, I would insist that you at least submerse yourself into making comments. The more you comment on what you see, the better you will start to see...

i think you should vote, I learn alot from analyzing photos for what I think are pros and cons and looking for ways I would improve a photograph, sometimes more than the comments I get from the challenge. There are no strict voting guidelines, my advice is just be consistent in what your voting is. Alot of people here enjoy the voting more than entering the challenges. And it also helps to comment on what you like or don't like to help verbalize what it is in the photograph you enjoy. My two cents.
Welcome to DPC!!

Wow. That's pretty cool. JP agrees with me! (I'd do the dancing banana thing but I think Rikki and Doc have exclusive rights or something.)

Ahh yes, but have you just started having opinions? Surely not. The vote that you give can be based on any number of factors, it doesn't have to be based on twenty years of field experience in photography telling you that a picture is technically "perfect".

If the new members don't vote, how's the site going to carry on when older people leave?

Now why would you want to do that?

Give the photo the vote that you want to give it. Everyone else will give their vote, the average will win out.

Nor am I, but that doesn't prevent me from knowing what I like.

Vote on this set :)

Either way, you may as well get some practice in. You could probably vote on about 300 images right now without any of them counting, because you have to go over 20% per challenge. Then you could also comment on a few and pick up some hints for yourself.

Plus I have found it lots of fun to see how the site vote as a whole compares with mine. So far a few of my 5s have been in the top three. :)

you are wrong partially.
Anyone, even a non-photographer, or aunt Mary, or uncle Honyak, can vote and give comments based on what they feel when they look at the photos presented here. And to answer your abc one by one:

a. your opinion is important even if you are not a photographer. Imagine if Mozart's music is only liked by other musicians or composers, while the rest of the world thinks it's crap... that would be sad, wont it?

b. why is that important? do you vote for President XYZ because that's what other voters are leaning towards?

c. technicals on a photo is not everything. Ask John Setzler :p

I voted my first challenge, and commented where I felt I could. Afterwards I went through every entry and compared my votes and comments with the rest. I found that in most cases I was within a point or so either side of the popular vote and my comments on technical points were almost always made by at least one other.
Doing that made me much more comfortable with voting after that, because I didn't feel I was coming from left field in my approach.
Just go for it... it's the best way to learn :D

Thank you all for your opinions. And, yeah, I'm going to vote.
