I suggest posting the 4th and 5th Place Honorable Mentions on the front page. There are several reasons:

1) The number of entries have increased greatly over the years. Recognizing additional images would not dilute the % receiving recognition, but bring it closer to times past.

2) The number of outstanding entries has increased bringing bringing a larger pool to "show off." This could have a good PR effect.

3) With as many "heavy hitters" (those who ribbon easily and often, additional talent can be recognized.

4) The majority of users have larger monitors than when the system was designed. The space is available to recognize additional shots.

5) No additional work is added to the SC. The top 5 would still be validated. The top 3 would still be ribboned. Fourth and Fifth currently get stars and Honorable Mentions on the left column of their profile page, so the recognition is not unprecidented.

This idea was presented 2 years ago in a thread which asked for more substantial changes. That thread is here.

I second this..
This would be a good recognition to all those photographers who's put in the effort in getting those great shots.

Cheers..

The only issue I have with this offhand is real estate. Those browsing at lower resolutions won't be able to handle five thumbnails in a row in addition to the front page sidebar. Multiple rows for each challenge when we're having three, four and five challenges would make the front page soooo loooong.

Third and a half-th.

I like the idea, but I think D&L will be hesitant to make the home page inconvenient for 17" monitors.

how about just one additional column to the right of 3rd place with text links to 4 thru 10

I propose a free 20" monitor with every membership.

Plenty of space for 2 extra photos in 1024x768... unless people are still using 800x600...

Getting to the top 10 is already just a click away. Maybe we could list "Honorable mentions: Photographer 1, Photographer 2" in the challenge title bar above the thumbnails? It could link to the first page of the challenge as usual (to see both thumbnails with one click), but would give those photographers a tip of the hat.

I'd vote for this if it was retrospective of course:)) (the honourable mention not the free monitor...but if you are giving them away...)

also,

dispute time, like 24 hours after challenge over... and if anyone disputes (first 10 only) there is another voting within critique members only, in 24 hours, just for the disputed photo.

a thought :P

There has been room on all the monitors I've used, including some pretty small lap tops. Of course the 800x600 would end up with a side scroll (which is yucky), but according to our last poll of monitor size, very few had 800x600 any more.

Wow. I've been having the longest brain fart ever. I always read that as "nasti gator." D'oh!

That may be true, but IMO the first page of a site should be as open as possible to account for visitors and newbies who may have lesser equipment.

I think it should be left with just the top three images. It isnt that difficult to click on the challenge title and see the top images on the first page.

The front page of the site should be neat, and I think adding more images via thumbnails would create congestion.

Actually mk, I've been reading it that way too... I'd say something about "great minds", but the context sorta' makes that look unlikely ;-)

Back on topic, everything I run still has smallish displays, so adding more pics to the homepage would mean I'd have to scroll across - which is a pain. So, at least for now, I'm against this.

Unless of course someone wants to give me a 20" flatscreen....

Wow. I had the same thought when I read that line. I'm glad I'm not the only one...

The "Top n" could be displayed based on the users 'images per row" preference in their profile. I'd see the top 6 that way ;)

count me in as a supporter ;)

and while we're at it...

4th
5th

I stand corrected. Five will fit, six won't. I think I'm still kinda partial to three, I dunno...

have anyone considered breaking it up into 2 rows?
ie..

[1st Picture] [2nd Picture] [3rd Picture]
[4th Picture] [5th Picture] [6th Picture?]

:)

Let's just make all the thumbs really small so they don't infringe on the forums...

Yep...sounds good to me.
