Found this bird making strange noises up in the tree yesterday. Just curious what kind of a bird it is... any ideas?

That looks about right. My color (WB) may be off just a bit, but there was definitely a bit of color down in the white part of the feathers as well.

Thanks!

Lophortyx californicus. The only other quail with that kind of topknot is Gambel's quail, which has, instead of the barred breast, white with a black patch.
It's not that common to see them in trees, but more often in groups on the ground. They'll strut along in a row, crests bobbing, and will scurry madly if threatened, only flying if running isn't enough. It's really quite funny watching them :)

it's funny that you say that about not being in trees--I agree that usually we see them on the ground around here or in bushes, but I've more than once seen one in a tree (it was probably scared up into it for some reason or another).

We have a small group of them that live around my apt complex--we also have feral cats--so one of them may have scared them up there.

I got about as close as I could (it didn't seem to be afraid of me) but it was still high up enough that it reminded me that a 70-200mm lens is *no* birding lens! Some day, gotta get me some really long glass... :-)

California quail. Male is always the lookout in the trees.

It also has a striking resemblance to the Gambel's Quail we get here in Arizona - //www.richard-seaman.com/Wallpaper/Nature/Birds/ForestAndField/GambelsQuail.jpg. This might very well be the same bird though.

Cal. Quail roost in spruce trees in Boise in my in-laws yard. So, its not unusual to see them in trees. Gambel's are more desertly, and are more likely to be seen on the ground. Both species are in the Salt Lake area. Van
