I have this old flash, canon speedlite 188A flash from my parents old camera gear and wanted to know if I could somehow use it with my D5O in some capacity. I know nothing about using flashes so I don't know what I would need to do. Here is the manual I found on the internet. My guess is that I would need some sort of cable, and would have to learn how to set the exposure maually and make adjustments after test shots to the camera since they would work independent of eachother? Could I buy a slve and use it this way? I have no idea, any suggestions...
Thanks

Hey cat, I have a couple of ideas.

BEFORE you do this, use a multi-tester and check to see the voltage coming off the system. It does mention in the manual that it's a high voltage system... you don't want to fry the camera... Some flashes use like 700+ volts I've heard.

#1 - check for a PC Sync hole. There is usually one on the back if there is one... It's usually a 2.5mm headphones plug or some other weird plug... If you have it, it should be fairly standard.

If you do, you can either get a PC-sync adaptor and use it like that OR

#2 - find a slave flash mount... I saw one the other day that was like 18 bucks USD equiv. It was by a brand named Tumax. It was called something like S101S or some similar silly name...

It mounts to a tripod mount and has it's own slave detector. It will then fire the flash that way. It even has it's own PC-Sync output cable which could be very handy if you wanted to use more than one...

It would be affected by very high voltages as well, so again, CHECK FIRST. Either way, if it does work, it should work just fine...

You might have to turn off any sort of I-TTL or anything similar that issues pre-flashes as I'm not sure how many options the Tumax device offers... My Tumax flash works great with my little S2 IS even with it's preflashes, but it has 5 modes... I didn't see anything like that on the hotshoe adaptor.

So I have been buying some random gear here and there and have got an SB-25 for $45 :) and a 42 inch reflector and a 32 inch opaque umbrella to shoot through, I think that what it is for. I had an american express gift I needed to use. :P
I also have a SB-600 and was planning to get some Cactus V2s triggers for them. It says I need the V2s for the sb600. I don't think this 188A is very helpful but was wondering if anyone knows if it would fry the trigger if I gave it a gander. Also how am I supposed to meter all these things. I haven't go that far into the strobist, am I going to have to buy a light meter? Thanks for any help. I think I am going to just order two receivers for now so I can get my bearing abit.
