I am looking into buying a 70-200 f/2.8 for a sports photography venture I may be doing (as discussed in this thread). The Sigma (especially if used) cost significantly less than the Canon, and I'm on a tight budget. Aside from not being white and not having a red ring on the front, these are my concerns with the Sigma (70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO HSM).
AF: how does HSM compare to USM?
Build: The man at Dury's said people often bring it in for repairs
Sharpness: (namely, wide open at 200mm) MTF charts look good. I've read complaints and praises in this area. Is it an issue of quality control?
Compatibility: Will it definitely not be compatible with the *40d*? How much does it cost (time, money, trouble) to re-chip?
Also, does anyone know where I can try it out in Nashville, TN? (Already tried Dury's and Ritz Ultra Store)
Yes, I have waded through the dpc forums and researched (fredmiranda, photozone, sigmaphoto), and I still have that many questions. Thank you for your time and for any relevant information.

I have the older version of that lens. It's the same except for the DG designation which means the newer one has anti-refelctive coatings to eliminate sensor reflections.
It focuses as fast as my Canon USM lenses.
I think the build quality is comparable to Canon's best except that the Sigma in not weather sealed.
Sharpness thru the entire zoom range is right there with my L glass.
No one knows what's in the future but it will only need to be re-chipped if Canon makes changes to the way it's cameras communicate with lenses.
I am very happy with mine. I have used it for shooting sports both indoors and outside. It has earned me some of my highest scores here at dpc, as you can see: Sigma 70-200 f/2.8.
I have used it with a Sigma 2x teleconverter and it's still pretty sharp, but loses it's fast aperture out to 5.6 so better light is needed.

The HSM is slightly slower than the USM on the 70-200L's from what i've heard. Sharpeness is really a toss up, the sigma is really very good. I have heard issues with the things not working properly, mostly missfocusing (front/back). You have to consider that you get a 5 year vs a 1 year warrenty (altho i've never had a problem with ANY canon lens breaking). I don't see why it wouldn't work with the 40D, but even if it didn't the rechipping is free i believe. If you are on a budget, the sigma is a great bargain. If you want extra security go with the canon, but I personally haven't had problems with sigma either. |

Thank you Harvey and Logan! I didn't expect to have my many questions answered so thoroughly.
Additional thoughts are still more than welcome on the original post, but I'd like to throw this in: How does Sigma's new macro version compare to the non-macro? Is the optical quality the same? |

Put it like this...
Anyone who says the Canon or the Nikon is better than the Sigma hasn't used both...or is lying to not only you but themselves.
Talk to someone who's used both...otherwise, you can't trust what they say, based on what they read, somewhere, on the internet.

| I love the lens... buy it with a Minolta/Sony camera with Image Stablisation for less money than a Canon/Nikon IS/VR 70-200mm just on it's own without the body. |
