Just the last few rays of sun, and this piece of rainbow appeared - this chunk was all of it.. It wasn't raining and hadn't for a several hours, but there was obviously moisture there. The strange thing, though, was the way the colour "bled" so strongly toward the center of the arc, reminded me of northern lights. I've never seen that effect before. Probably because of the extreme angle of the light rays?
Anyway, *I* thought it was pretty (if you ignore the power lines).

Wow - Great having a camera at hand once in a while.
Those are really unique! Good job on being at the right place at the right time.

Actually I had just been shooting some pics in my bedroom of silhouettes using those same last rays thru' my roman shade, headed for the livingroom to load them, and saw that out the front window. So I literally had camera in hand!

And mycelium, I thought sundogs were around the sun? This was to the east. It was probably at about 6x zoom, but it WAS big!

I've seen that more than regular rainbows. It just has to do with the humidity of the clouds and the angle of limited light.

Excellent explanations (and pictures) of many of these phenomena at Atmospheric Optics.
