Alan...those are outrageously good shots...the focus, color, exposure...everything about them is terrific. One thing I'd like to know though, is how you managed to get on the field, or are you in the first row of the stands? |

Thanks for the kind words! I'm on the field -- I'm shooting Steelers games for my hometown newspaper. I had written a tutorial about my experience with doing the games last year... it's here if you're interested:

Alan, great tutorial...thanks for alerting me.
I would like to know a couple of things though...Are all your shots done with your 300mm tele lense and do you use a monopod for stablization? I don't see how you could get the kind of clarity and great focus you do with a tele lense that big. Also, I realize you are using high shutter speeds to freeze the action, but if you're following the ball how do you not get any blur? You have to move the lense to follow the ball, no??? :) |

I am using a 300mm lens, but it's not one of those huge babies you see most of the pro sports photographers using. Since it is a smaller variety, I haven't bothered with the monopod. I set the focus on "C" for "continous servo mode" (at least I think that's what it's called) so the lens is continually focusing as I shoot.
I definitely have my share of blurry shots -- not so much from motion blur since I'm shooting around 1/1000th of a second -- but from the camera focusing on something other than the subject.
Shooting a huge quantity of shots is definitely a key here. I took almost 600 shots today. You figure that out of all of those, hopefully some will be in good focus! :)

Hey Alan, great info and thanks again. I'm going to see if I can get on the field during the local college's football games this season
and see what kind of shots I can get. My Oly C2100 lense goes as high as 380mm optical, so I'll see what it can do, although shutter speed tops out only at 1/800th. I'll let you know how I do. Enjoy the season!

I especially like this one.The One I like.
It looks like the 31 player is helping the photographer with his monopod. It is a great interest shot with the loaded down photographer in the background. |

Well, that just figures! The Steelers are away the next two weeks... so I'll be as desperate as anyone for this week :) |

For the record, Alansfreed and Ridergal are on the pole for this race. I think this is going to be a fun challenge, if I get the time to get out and take some photos. At any rate, it will be a fun one to vote on. I hope I can come up with some out of the ordinary ideas.
