Well at the risk of bringing up a topic discussed to death I have a question.

What slide show software do you recommend. I would like to create a slideshow that I can both give to the client and present on the web.
A flash slideshow seems like it might be the easiest for the client to view on the web, but I open to other ideas.

From previous thread I have found two good contenders

Photo Story 3 for windows
ProShow Gold

any others?

IrfanView is a freeware tool that also do slideshows.
It can also save the slideshow into an EXE or SCR - pretty neat.
Doesn't do flash or web tho.

and while we are on this topic, does anyone know of a good place to download for free or to buy royalty free background music?

ProShow Gold is fantastic. It has a bit of a learning curve, but not too bad and has many powerful features. You can save it in many formats, but I don't remember if Flash is one of them.

If you have Macromedia Flash Encoder, you can make any .avi, .wav, etc. file into a flash movie for easy viewing.

There are several threads that talk about the slide programs.

I haven't tried any others but I use ProShow and love it.

I found several places to buy music online by doing a Google search for "royalty free music". This one looks pretty good and has some good albums you can buy for about $109 for 12+ songs.

I have really liked Windows Movie Maker that comes with Windows XP. It's simple to use and have a lot of transitions and effects. It would be great to use for a slide show. I don't know if you ware running PC or MAC, but if you are running PC then I suggest you give that a try. You can just click and drag the files into in Windows Movie Maker and then add a transition in between and you are all set for a slideshow. IT will export to .WMV file but you can get a free video converter to change it to mpg or avi.

Good luck!

well i have been using proshow for a while now today, giving it a trial run. it seems to be pretty good. I haven't totally figured out how all the output options work, but i think something should be able to work good.

i can't say i am a big fan of them flashing their logo for a few seconds at the beginning... or is this just in the trial version. If i make a wedding slide show for someone and they pay to receive it, i don't think they should have to put up with proshow's advertising.

I used ProSHow Gold for this slide show I did a while back (15min low-resolution web version - broadband needed and requires a 2.6MB plugin) and was very happy with the features and interface / ease of use. I think there was a setting to turn off the logo/splash screen too.
The slideshow was burned to CD and one of the nice things about the CD version that each of the families received, was that all the individual high-resolution image files were accessible if a parent wanted to print a picture of their son. Some slide shows don't make access to individual shots.
Choosing the right music and timing for key words to match up with certain shots is the tricky part and requires a LOT of time on a slide show like this.
Though all of it will mean little overall to anyone that watches it that wasn't a part of the team's CA State Championship (yes, my son was one of the 14 on the team), it was played during the dinner at the team's award banquet, and few dry eyes were to be found in the hall, and had the impact I was looking for.

Leaf, you can turn off that splash screen in the pro version.

I found a gold mine of beautiful royalty free music last night. This guy is fantastic and his music is totally free. All he asks is that he gets credit when you use his works and he suggests a donation of $5 per song you use.

Visit Kevin MacLeod's site here

I was up downloading laaaate into the night because it seemed too good to be true and I wanted to get it before it disappeared. LOL

I spent a summer making a new slideshow every two weeks, using Powerpoint, and then trying to play music with a stereo while running the show. Discovering ProShow Gold really was like discovering gold...pardon the cheesiness. I've found it to be quite easy to use, especially when it comes to adding the music.

As for royalty free music, here's a few sources:

//www.musicbakery.com - royalty free but with a price
//ghostnotes.blogspot.com/ - royalty free and free with permission

You can use classical music without a license right? As long as it was made over 50 years ago? Or am I wrong about this?

No, you can use the notes and play the songs, but the actual recordings are considered new music.

So, if you bought a CD recorded in the last few years, then that is still under copyright of the orchestra/recording company.

thanks for the posts.

I ended up downloading some things from StudioCutz

I ended up paying a bit, but I am happy with the music, and can use it in slide shows I make in the future. Hopefully I will get some use out of it.
