My uncle has a number of flashes but I'm not sure which ones would work on my camera. They are all Canon flashes but he uses them on his 35mm cameras. Is there a difference? Thanks and sorry for the noob question.

If you want 'just work' you want one of the canon flashes with 'ex' at the end of the number. ie: 220ex, 380ex, 420ex, 550ex, 430ex, 550ex, 580ex (and a few more I can't think of)

Some of the older ones with non-ttl auto modes will also work, but that's a whole other story...

I have the 420ex, but it doesn't work. It flashes, but the camera doesn't seem to see the light, or something like that.

Anybody is familiar with this?

I just got a 430EX in the mail today and while I still have to read the manual, I like it alot so far.

That's odd. It's probably the 'pre flash' firing, but it's either under-exposing the main flash, or not flashing at all...

- Do you have the flash compenstation set in camera? If it's set -2 stops things can be pretty dark.
- have you checked/charged/replaced the batteries? If the batteries a low it's possible the pre-flash will fire OK, but the main flash might not.
- Custom function 7 can disable the flash, check that.
- Do you have the lens cap on? :-).
- What mode are you shooting, and if not P or A, what settings are you using?
- Check the contacts on the flash and hot-shoe. Crud on those contacts can make the canon flashes do odd things...

FYI, I have a 420ex and I've used it on my 10D, 20D, 300D, and an older 1D, and it should work on the 30D, it's mostly the same as the 20....
