I think I chose the wrong one :(
Here was my other choice...the building is still soft, but in better focus than my entry. I liked the colors better in the entry, but perhaps this one has better impact.
My entry:

Honesstly its the first image that catches my eye right away. The lighter color of the fireworks enhance the statue on the building, therefor making it a stronger composition and image. But thats just my opinion. either way great shots.

I would have liked to enter either of these two. But decided to go with a cleaner looking image. I really had a hard time choosing a shot for this challenge. I am not used to getting 50 good shots to pick from. usually I look for the best photo out of 3 or 4 so so shots that I can make look the better in post processing.
in this case I actually had to tone it down a bit instead. and it ended up being my best score to date. and my first 6 woot!

I like your entry better, too. A sturdy tripod would have made a HUGE difference on your score IMO.
I captured some cool "straight" fireworks shots last year, but they're just that. Your decision to include the building/monument adds more interest than the fireworks alone (a wise move), and the top 9 finishers took a similar approach. |

I agree with you. I think he would have scored well with the first photo. Very Sharp.

My tripod (I did use one) was sturdy I think. I even had it weighted down, although there was only a light breeze.
I think part of the problem was no remote. I usually use self timer for my tripod shots, but obviously that wouldn't probably work as well for fireworks. Do you think simply having a remote would have made a difference? |

Unless it accidentally gets put in lock mode (like mine did) and does it's own thing for awhile. Nice shots of dark sky and partial bursts. ;) |

I second the remote confirmation. I used a manual cable release to start and stop the exposure. One of the things I was trying to do, given my vantage point, was capture the path of the fireworks at my location. I think this helped get me a decent sense of scale.
I didn't realize it until I saw all the challenge entries, but the fireworks at my location were really pretty boring, garden variety fireworks. I liked seeing all the different kinds in this challenge.

What I did was set my shutter speed to 30 secs. I then put my hat over the lens and pushed the shutter. Then removed the hat for the fireworks. Before the shutter closed I would cover the lens with my hat again. This seemed like a good process to avoid the shake.
I only did this because I didn't have a remote (but it is on my wish list):

Agree.
I wanted to try that but was afraid it wouldn't turn out and then I'd miss the best one. Plus, I wear visors. ;) I read a piece of black paper works. There's a big, big display in Cincinnati, Ohio on Labor day. I'm going to try it. |

Do you know what area you're going to be at for those? I did Devou Park one year, but didn't care for that shot. |

From two years ago. No time to shoot this year:
This is just a personal opinion, but fireworks images are way more interesting when the shot contains landscape features.

I don't know the area very well at all. I've lucked into some tickets to take a dinner train excursion from Norwood ? and arrive by Montgomery Inn. We'll then have to walk along the riverwalk to our choice of spots. Not sure how crowded it will be, though. I've heard it's packed everywhere. I'm going on the train mostly for the food :) and to avoid the traffic. Hopefully, I'll be able to find someplace to set up. Not sure.
