I do a lot of slide shows set to music. I know I can't sell them since I am using someone elses music but occasionally someone asks if I will create a video for them and would be willing to pay for it.
Does anyone know where or how to find music that can be put on a slide show and sold? Any idea how to go about getting permission to use music or any idea how much it might cost?
Thanks for any help I can get.

You can find lots of "royalty free" music on the Web.
It's especially useful if you have (or can get your hands on) software like Acid Pro.
I use it for video, etc. It's quite easy. You can import "loops" and samples and blend them on a timeline where you can adjust pitch and tempo, etc.
The results can be quite good. I'm not a musician but I've been able to burn a whole CD of tunes I created this way.
Hope this helps. Good luck. |

Hmmm thanks Fromac. I'll have to look for that program. I'm not real musically inclined either but I know what sounds good anyway.

So "royalty free" music can be used in any way?

I downloaded a trial version of Acid Pro last night. Didn't have time to play with it much but it looks great. Thanks for the tip.

i am interested in this as well.
Is it legal to create a slide show for someone and put music with it, and burn it to a dvd? How about if I purchase the song as an mp3 for each dvd I burn?

Just buying the music (eg: CD, or MP3 over net) so not enough to be able to sell a slideshow with it in. It's like saying that you have can sell a calendar with photos that you have bought as prints. You will have to get permission from the artist(s). |

I love to use Jim Brickman's music for this, so I wrote to him and the reply I got was that I could use his music in any way as long as there is no money made from it. So I assume its ok to use it the way you said.
I make videos of my photos for things like birthday partys, weddings, reunions and burn them to cds and dvds and give them away.

In some cases music may not be copyrighted in the United States in which case you should be able to use it. I know there is something with Paul McCartney and how he has to pay a fee to play alot of the beatles songs when he tours the US. Because he no longer owns the US rights to the beatles songs,. however when he plays anyplace else in the world the songs are open game. So if a record is copyrighted in England or Austrailia doesnt mean it is protected in the United States. This prob only works on Imports and Bootlegs as I am sure no one is stupid enough to market their music in the US and not try to protect it.
I have a stack of CD's I purchased full of royalty free songs. I use them when I produce videos. I have on two occassions written directly to the artist and received written permission to use songs. But in both cases the music was used on Educational Instruction Videos for a Non Profit Hospital so They were happy to donate to a good cause. If it had been for commercial use I am sure a copy right fee would have been manditory.
You can also go the Route that Fromac suggested. Any music editing software will work and believe me there are alot of programs out there. even some video editing software can do the job,
I use a Roland VS2400 (which functions just like Acid Pro, but it is a stand alone unit) to link together loops master them and then transfer them to my video editor or computer depending on what I am going to use them for.
I have recorded a few songs with my guitar using drum loops that I downloaded from professional drummers websites. You can have a heap of fun editing and mastering music.
