I haven't seen these birds around and am curious if someone knows what they might be.
They are rather small, shrill & noisy, and fast!

And finally got near enough one that sat still:

I am probably way off base with this one... but it does look a it like a killdeer. These birds will often drop a wing and pretends to be injured when you approach their nest. They are very noisy and their call sounds something like "killdeer... killdeer" hence their name.

They can be found in an array of locations, ranging from shorelines to farmers' fields.

Hope this helps a bit.

THAT is the craziest thing I ever heard. Although I have heard voices that say "burnvillage burnvillage" but those are in my head. ;-)

Nature is bizarre.

Very nice shots, btw, Brad.

They get real pissy when you get around them. Mostly because they lay their eggs on the ground. If you would have looked around you probably would have found the nest close by. The one in my photo would ruffle it's feathers up, stick it's wings out and charge me when I got close to it.

Thanks all.
They were along the shoreline at the local lake and couldn't get anywhere near them.
Noisy critters they are, and darn near impossible to track in the air as they change
lanes as fast as a California driver, and don't use their turn signals either. :)
