My entry has moobs, they're driving people away :(

Hmm, well, I'm always happy with a 6, but I'm also always trying to get over my average. At least I knew the first vote of 4 was wrong... ;)

Off and running with my first challenge. I guess it's not doing as badly as I thought it would.

AMAZINGLY insulting. I havent scored this low since the doll over the toilet shot, and that was edgy/offensive. this is not in any way. let alone it has one of my kids in it which makes me more angry. they are waaay too cute for 4.6! :(

Never had a sub-5 after this many votes. I wouldn't enter a shot I thought had a chance at a sub-5 score. (DPC Cinema was close!)

What is going on here? This one isn't even controversial. Does "Perspective" mean Vanishing Point? If that is the only definition then a lot of people are in trouble.

If you use the dictionary.com definition which, imho, is a pretty common sense definition then there are two meanings. The obvious one which is related to vanishing points, and then the secondary meaning which is a -> mental <-, not physical, reference to point of view. eg, your perspective on the the challenge definition is very literal, my perspective is much broader.

Many of the submissions are point of view shots (point of view of a bug, a bird, whatever). Maybe that affects score.

Don't want to have a disagreement over it, just offering one point of view ;)

"Use perspective to create a dramatic effect with your photograph."

I had a lot of trouble looking through the entries and seeing pictures with titles like 'from the perspective of a drowned rat'. If I then suspend my disbelief and indulge the title-writer in the fiction that the photograph that I'm looking at should have something to do with the point of view/attitude/opinion/fate or whatever of a waterlogged rodent, then maybe I can see some sort of drama there (this is a fictive example, by the way), but if the picture does not create a dramatic effect visually by the use of perspective, then it's got a lot of work left to do.

Vanishing points and lines of perspective are a bit obvious, it's true. They quite often work though. Deliberate contrasts of near and far or of things that appear exceptionally big because they're so close to the camera etc., also work, sometimes. Perspective isn't all about vanishing points, but if the drama's in the title and not in the picture...

If so, mine should be doing much better. It's not vanishing point, but it is perspective. And it's a decently composed, exposed shot. I'm not saying ribbon material, but it does fit the category and I know a decent shot when I see one.

sub-5 is usually reserved for shots that are way off in DNMC land or there's something technically wrong with the shot.

How does one add comments to their own submission after voting starts? I've gotten a couple of comments on over-exposure, etc. When I submitted the picture, it looked great on my monitor. However lightning hit something in the computer last night and I am now at the local library. Looking at the image from the library's monitor, it looks very different than it did at home. I now wonder if this has been the cause of low scores in the past that I failed to understand.

Every photo is taken with some kind of perspective, but some perspective is more commonplace and boring than other types. The trick for this particular challenge is to use perspective to create a "dramatic" image.

I'm up to 5.44.

It can't be done. Access to photographer's comments on one's own images was something I suggested awhile back, to no avail (that I know of). I'm wondering if calibrating your monitor will help?
07/12/2006 12:57:20 PM · #117
When we get everything fixed, I plan to do that. I ran into this problem once before with a difference in my monitor and my mom's, my mom's being much worse. I sent a couple of images to a e-friend who is a photographer by trade and she said the images looked fine on her monitor, so I assumed my monitor was fine. Incidentally, how are monitors calibrated?

I just checked your profile and your images look fine on my work monitor. It's a good monitor but needs a small bit of tweaking to get the calibration perfect. Nothing in your images look too dark or too bright.

My guess is that the library's monitor is not calibrated and may be way off from where it should be. Did you ever calibrate your home monitor? Can you see all of the shaded boxes at the bottom of the pictures?

I wondered about the library's monitor also, but with the couple of comments that I got on overexposure (the area is a very light area) I questioned the calibration on my own monitor. It's possible that the monitors belonging to the people making the comment may not be calibrated either.

I think a lot of voters will not recognize any perspective that is not vanishing point perspective. In fact, I'm having trouble thinking of any other kind of perspective you can catch in a camera.

Guess mine is too much point of view and too little perspective for the voters. I think I am suffering from the mindset of needing a distinct vanishing point, especially when many if not most of the submissions do offer that.

Went from a 4.75 last night to a 4.15 today.

The rate I'm going it just might be my lowest score evar!

C'est la vie

:)

Somebody must have better than a 4. I didn't enter this one, but I imagined 7's for everybody!

I have still yet to vote. I will do my part to increase those scores that are deserving of more.
07/12/2006 01:48:16 PM · #125
Just as I thought! I thought my score would suffer on this one because some are going to wonder if it is within basic editing rules. My first comment is about wondering how it was done.

Now I don't feel so bad. As long as it is because of that and not just a bad photo, I can live with a bad score :)
