Just like you said, it's a flash designed for just macro photography. And from what I hear they work really well.

its alot of fun

the item on top is a transmitter to the other modules everything is iTTL so the pictures come out pretty well ;) was shot with a two flash system ..

That's basically the same principle as a ring flash set up. This one looks like it has a LOT of ability to control the seperate flashes though. Nice looking macro flash setup.

Wow, I've seen ring and two-head units, never a three-head one. Personally, I find it just as effective to light my macro shots using a shoe-mounted flash and a reflector. I can, however, see applications where that approach would not be feasible, especially where shadow-free lighting is desired or in confined areas where a reflector would pose an access problem.
In most applications, I like a soft shadow, it looks more natural than completely diffuse lighting.

the concept doen't hold to 'just' 3 flash heads
the ring can hold up to 8 contolling power in (up to 3) groups

they don't have to stay on the ring either -- thay all come with stands

and they can work with the SB800/600 flash heads as well ...
