I'm not sure exactly what you are asking... are you looking for ways to create black & white images in PSE3?

Dlove I found this in a forum on another site-- maybe it can help

"There is a way to turn a color image into a black and white creating your
own channel mixer for appling monochrome or grayscale effects for your images
and this how you can do it! (this is a work around)

First of all using the greyscale mode doesn't give you a true White scale. So
how do you creat a channel mixer In Elements

(Step 1)
First open your Image.

(Step 2)
Next create a Hue/saturation layer above your background layer, and don't
adjust the settings.

(Step 3)
Create a Black and white gradient map layer on the top of the stack.

Now about the gradient map layer, the default set has a black and
white option. But you need to check the color settings used for it
because the white is not set to true white, it's off a little bit for some
reason. You'll have to change this off white to white.

Then once you have the gradient map set to true black and white,
go to the hue and saturation layer and make simple changes to each
channel (red, blue, green, yellow, etc. etc.) to bring out the
effect your looking for, or improve the tones you already have.

You have to remember that true red under a black and white gradient
maps will appear black. By doing it this way you can create a
better black and white and get some different looking images by
simple changing the channel setting.

There's a plug-in for doing this, but's it not free."

EDIT-- I do believe this method would be "Advanced" Editing only..
