Since I don't really know good computer hardware forums and I trust the opinions of the people here I am asking the following;
To what extent is it possible to take the master HD (with OS) from one pc and put into another (totally different) one, again as a master, without installing software?
The 'problem' is that I still have a Intel P2 600Mhz 128mb slow Windows 98 SP2 machine that runs some software and specific external hardware that runs better on Win98 instead of Win XP (was not designed for that and there are no updates). Because of ever increasing databases it becomes slower and slower.
I also have a slightly less older, perfectly ok AMD 1200Mhz 256mb system with a better videocard and all that isn't used anymore.
So I was wondering if I can take the HD out of the 600mhz systemand put it in the 1200Mhz system, hang the other stuff in the right places and just try to let it boot and see what happens? I fear that it is not that easy. :)
Maybe I should just try to transfer all the software to the 1200Mhz own HD, but that would cost more time... I tried to see if the 256mb dimm would fit in the 600, but you cannot get DDR in a SD slot. :)
Now that I am asking stuff anyway;
Could it be possible to hang the HD from the 600 as a slave in the 1200 and transfer the data that way while only installing the software on the 1200's own HD? I assume that when I install a 2nd HD as slave the operating system that is still on that disk will not interfere with the one on the master (because the bios is also set to boot from the master one only).
Building from scratch is easy but I have no experience with the above.
I do have backup of all the data. :) Just trying to find the easiest way.

If you'll be installing it as a slave then make sure that the switches in the back is set for slave and not master. Eventhough your slave has an operating system in it, the bios is set to look for the master unless you specifically tell it to boot from the slave. |

On the HD next to the ribbon cable input, there are pins and jumpers. There should be a little diagram on the HD that explains where the jumpers need to go on what pins to make it a slave drive. The only problem would be if you were to take the XP drive out and put it in another computer as a master, it would recognize that it's in a different computer and then you'd have contact Microsoft to change the XP license to work on that computer.
You might be able to use the program directly from the slave drive without re-installing it on the master drive. Browse to that drives "program files" folder and then the particular program's folder and look for the programs icon/name with the .exe on the back. You could right-click it and set it as a shortcut on the desktop for future use. I've done this many times with no problems. But if you have the disk and time, it's always better to re-install it to the new master. |

To practically no extent.
Especially considering you are going from a very different hardware setup from one pc to another.
Bunch of different drivers etc.
I just replaced a fried mother board with another of the same maker but a different chipset and I had to reinstall windows et al.
Slaving it is your best bet.
Good luck,

Thanks for your answers. Gonna try the slave route and see what runs and not.
