Can anyone explain this to me? Does this mean if I enter a picture of the Statue of Liberty just as it is. It is not valid, but if I use her face then it is legal? Is this rule confusing or am I just a little too blonde today?
Artwork. Literal photographic representations of the entirety of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, and computer artwork.

I believe that the Statue of Liberty is so large that it should be legal anyway you take a picture of it. Lighting would be pretty much out of your control, other then waiting for the time of the day. Cropping would also be up to you.
On the otherhand taking a picture of a postcard straight on would be illegal. If the artwork looks like it was placed on a scanner and scanned then it will probably be illegal.

The way the literal artwork rule is interpreted, you have to try *really* hard to get disqualified shooting a 3 dimensional object. The rule is intended to eliminate folks passing an artwork (even their own) off as a photo. We interpret it very narrowly. If there is much of any "interpretation" by the photographer, it's OK. |

There's a nifty tutorial which helps explain the literal artwork rule HERE in the LEARN section of DPChallenge. Enjoy! |

If you have questions about the legality of edits, the best way to address it is to ask the question in a ticket. Go to Help>Contact and open a "General Inquiry" ticket. |
