Last night I received an email stating that the Canadian Red Cross would like to use some of my photos of the Okanagan Mountain Park forest fire for some of their posters and other media. I have never had a picture used or published anywhere before, so I hope to obtain a copy of any posters they use my pictures on. I was kind of excited, and just wanted to share. :)

Congrats Dan and you do own all rights to the photos so make sure you tell them you want copies of the posters and put it in writing. Because you own the copyright they have to meet your requests to be able to use the photos. If all you are asking for is a copy of any posters they use the photos for they should feel very lucky.

Heartiest congrats in getting your work recognised as "valuable".

But please do not let your excitement cloud your judgement and decision making faculties.

It has been widely commented upon over many years in the UK semi-pro/pro photo press that abuse of copyright by agencies is sadly widespread.

Though the Red Cross has charitable status you must make sure that you state under what conditions YOU are allowing the use of the photo's.

IMO at the very least you must make clear that all images printed must be credited to you and that you own the copyright. For your own largesse and kudos I surmise you could allow them fee free to publish them only on their Canadian literature.

If they want copyright and control - charity or not you must think about saying that a fee is required, bearing in mind that if that is what they want you will likely lose all publishing rights to the images including (I would think) posting them on sites like this.

Get it clear, get it in writing and make sure you stay aware of what you might lose or gain.

One day I would love to have such an e-mail and hope that I remember to take my own advice. lol!
