Anyone have opinions on these two lenses? Is the Nikon worth nearly a grand more? I'm seriously thinking of replacing my Nikon 18-70 kit lens. I already have the Nikon 12-24 f4 and the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR.

I'm not sure about the Nikkor lens, but I've heard nothing but good things about the Tamron. That and it's $1000 less than the Nikon.

| That Tamron lens is well regarded and quite popular (at least the Canon Version), good performer for a bargain. You can't go wrong with either...It's all up to you, is the slight difference in image quality and lens construction worth $1,000? |

Gringo as I'm sure you've seen has one and his images inspired me to buy mine.
I love my Tamron and keep it fixed as my going to work, all around lens but if my time is dedicated to shooting I use the Nikon. It's a better lens. Better color...better contrast and sharper. The Tamron is an amazing lens for the money and IMO not that far off from the Nikon.
If you're shooting for the internet, it won't make much of a difference.

Thanks guys.
Man, I hate to compare to Gringo! But he does produce some beautiful work with it.
I have been slowly upgrading my lenses and also enlarging the prints I make. I have been askd to hang some lately for informal shows so who knows ...
I do like quality ... |

Ok...now we're talkin. Print is a far different world from the internet...DPC....screen viewing...screen cropping etc.
The Nikon is a better lens and will make a difference to some eyes especially in print...big print, without question. Hardcore people will easily see the difference between lenses.

Here are a few handheld shots that I took with the Nikon 28-70mm. The image quality is exactly like that of the 70-200mm 2.8 VR. |
