"An onomatopoeia is a type of word that sounds like the thing it is describing."

I thought, probably because it's almost 6:00 am and I haven't yet slept, that it would be fun to hear (no pun intended) everyone's favorite onomatopoeias.

But then I realized this sounded like a challenge suggestion thread and I started thinking about taking photos that show a lot of noise happening, and how awesome that would be.

Then I started rambling. :-)

Japanese has thousands of onomatopoeic words, some of which wouldn't make any sense to you.

For example, a sliding door goes "gara-gara-gara".

Animals also make different sounds. A pig goes "bu-bu-bu" and not "oink", a dog goes "wan-wan".
