For CS3, it should be here:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats

The drive letter may be different depending on where your operating system and/or applications were installed.
You can find it by opening the C:\program files folder and typing and then searching for the file named "camera raw.8bi". You should find it; there may be multiple versions in different places if you have more than one version of PS installed.

Since this thread is being bumped every few months, I'll just add this bit. If you only need to open/view and do basic editing on RAW files, then a very nice utility is FastStone Image Viewer It's Windows only. And it's Freeware for non-commercial use!

Ah, you must have gotten the proverbial "one bad apple" ;-)

In general, you should be able to locate the file by searching the disk for the file "Camera Raw.8bi" which I *think* is named the same on Macs and PCs. If not, search for the file name that is identical to the one downloaded.

(Note that this is the main Library at the root level of your hard drive, not the one under your username)

can I ask for some help with this too, please.

Last night I got back from the Elbow gig and pulled the images off the card. They loaded up in Bridge but they don't have actual picture thumbnails. They are named correctly, ie: IMG_3483.CR2 but they won't open!? Error message says 'Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognise this type of file' even though I have been using RAW for months.

I could see them on the back of the camera before I copied the images off the card.

I did a general Mac software update the other day and I noticed that there was an update for ACR. Could it have been something to do with that? I tried another Mac but get exactly the same result so it's not my Mac although it might have been something that happened when I copied the images over?

Since I copied the images into a file on my Desktop, the camera will no longer show the pictures, I just get a message saying 'Camera cannot display image'.

Any clues?

What camera and what version of photoshop are you using?

CR2 can come from several cameras. The files from the latest cameras (like the 40D) will only be recognized by CS3.

Have just purchased a 40D as an upgrade from my 20D which my husband is now using. Have encountered a similar problem as described above with my RAW files from my 40D in CS2 but never with my 20D.

Would a simple upgrade to CS3 be the best solution? The adobe upgrades don't work and I'd rather not use any other software in addition to Photoshop CS2 (or whatever version) with Adobe Bridge to avoid any complications etc.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You need CS3 and at least V4.2 of the RAW plugin for PS to recognize the CR2 files from the 40D.

You can also get a download on Adobe's website that converts the 40d raw files to DNGs so you can use them on CS2. Or you can get lightroom:) Very sweet!

Thank you 'trevytrev' and 'cpanaioti' for your replies, that's what I needed to have confirmed.

Now for a stupid question regarding the DNG converter...it put the file into a folder on my desktop, along w/the plugin...do I need to move it into an Adobe CS2 file somewhere???? (I'm NOT a computer whiz.)
