I wasn't sure if this was the best place for this, but its specific to the Digital Photo Professional software you get with the Rebel XT soo...

In the tool pallette for RAW photos there is a graph that has a slider that goes from -9.0 to 3.5 (at least those are the numbers for the graph) there is also a checkbox marked "Linear".

My question is.. what exactly does the slider adjust? From the looks of things it seems like its fiddling with the contrast in the image but I wanted to be sure before I use it on a Basic Challenge photo and unknowingly do something DQ-worthy.

So... I guess that's two questions:

What does that slider/graph adjust & represent?

and

Is making adjustments with the slider okay for a Basic Challenge?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you, those tutorials were very helpful with my first question!

So now that I know adjusting the end points shifts my shadow/highlight points.. and that adjusting the slider changes the shape of the tone curve... umm..

Is adjusting that valid for a basic challenge? Visually it doesn't seem to change the image any more drastically than the typical Curves option but just when I think I know something is okay for sure, it turns out I'm wrong.

So if someone could confirm that'd be appreciated.

Thank you.

Perfectly legal. Pretty much anything you can do in RAW is considered in-camera for all intent and purposes. Thre are some limitations (ie using a control to add elements, such as the vignettting adjustments in Adobe Camera RAW.) But, you won't run into any problems with this control.

Thank you both for your help!

Those little tutorials were pretty nice. Took forever to download but they answered a few questions I'd had so I truly appreciate the link.

I found something else that is cool about DPP.

Applying Picture Styles to RAW files of EOS cameras that don't have this feature.
