Too late for the desolation challenge, my son-in-law and I took our Ducatis on a road trip around Mt. St. Helens. Here are a few photos I added to my portfolio.

May 18th, 1980. When the mountain erupted it did so in three stages: 1) A giant bulge that had been growing rapidly on the Northeast side of the mountain was dislodged by earthquakes and slide down the mountain side and into Spirit Lake causing a wave 800 feet high. When the lake settled, the water level was 200 feet higher than before. 2) The pressure that had been building then blew the top third of the mountain North and East. Boulders from the blast were found as far as 5 miles away. The resulting firestorm traveled at 500 miles per hour and scorched and burned the forest for miles. The farthest reaches of the blast zone are 18 miles from the mountain. 3) The mountain then produced an ash cloud 30,000 feet high emiting 10 dump truck loads of ash every second for 9 hours. The cloud took two weeks to completely circle the earth.

The area around the mountain was sterilized by heat and buried by rock, mud and ash. Still a desolate place. But life is gradually coming back. The eruption continues in the form of dome building by lava that continues to flow from the crater. At the present rate (about 1 dump truck load a minute), St. Helens will have rebuilt itself in 80 years.

Hope you enjoy the photos. Hope you get the cance to visit one day.

Looks like a fun trip. Too bad you missed the desolation challenge, the pics would have done really well.
