Tuesday is the only day this week I have free to go shooting; so I'm hoping people don't typically visit the zoo on Independence Day. Anyone have any experience with this particular issue?

I would say yes. There's usually special events on holidays. Best to go first thing in the morning as the events typically don't start until later in the day.

I am pretty sure it's illegal to shoot animals at the zoo. And besides it isn't very sporting either. Of course a few good shots could thin the crowd pretty quick.

....oh wait......'shooting' at the zoo.

Somebody had to say it.

YUP! and all weekend, too.

The zoo will most likely be a "zoo!" If you get my drift.

I don't know about the zoo in New York, but those in Cincinnati, Louisville, and Chicago allow it, even encourage it. I've been trekking around those zoos plenty of times with all of my gear, including a tripod. Now, if you want to sell those photos you better be sure no one can prove they were taken at a zoo, because then you might run into some trouble.

edit: Oh I get it now, it was a joke. I should read things more carefully. ;-)

One thing to keep in mind though, I don't know how things are at your zoo, but here in LA when it's hot some of the animals are never to be seen. They go into their holding pens behind/underneath their exhibit to keep cool and you miss out on a lot.

No...they r wrong...u will be fine. I work at a zoo and usually the forth of July is no bussier than any other day. But every other day...especially i am assuming in New York is still VERY busy. We had 4,000 on our 77 acre zoo this weekend...So yes it will be crowded, but no it wont be out of the ordinary.

I work at a tourist destination and it was crazy today. Many people took a 4 day weekend. Lot's of families. Many calls to ask if we were open on the 4th also.

Expect lot's of folks going early and leaving in the afternoon to start up their BBQ.

I liked living in Denver but I sure don't miss that freeway (or 285) on ANY weekend let alone a holiday weekend!!! It's worse on the way back at the end of the weekend... they are all going downhill fast!!!
