| I know white balance doesn't matter in RAW - but what about all the other settings? My D70 Lantern guide recomends I set contrast, saturation etc. pretty flat on my camera when shooting RAW. Does it matter? If I set contrast to high but later decide I want it low am I going to degrade the image quality by changing it in my RAW processing software? |

you can always undo any in camera changes in Raw
i found i was undoing all the changes all the time - so i try to set as flat as possible

Yes, some RAW converters will pre-load the in-camera settings, but it's all changable. Personally, I prefer to sstart with a flat image coming into PS. Curves can bump both contrast and saturation.

You can change the values of the saturation, contrast, etc sliders. I have everything set to zero because I prefer to start with an image just as the camera captured it. It's a matter of personal preference.

For my purposes, I agree with this when jumping straight to a 16-bit image (which I do for the most important and/or most difficult to edit images).
But if I'm converting to an 8-bit image, then I'll do as much at the raw conversion stage as possible before I ever get the image into PS. In fact, with RawShooter Premium's ability to set curves and levels, I hardly ever touch an image in PS until the customer says they want to enlarge it. All 4x6's are straight out of RSP without editing.
