In the past I have taken the side off and put a desk fan next to it to blow cool air in my case.

Then I got This MONSTER and haven't had a problem since. Fans sold separately. I'm running 2 fans off of it. Yes it is HUGE but it works great, is fairly easy to install and doesn't have any of the downsides of watercooling.

Edit: It's also the quietest computer I've ever owned now.

Fans are very noisy if you have too many, a water cooling system or a peltier are quiet alternatives.

This might not be the norm, but I had a lot more heat issues after installing multiple fans into my case. However I think that it was just a bad processor and that it was just coincidence.

buy a decent fan for the CPU and some silver thermal paste - make sure you don't use too much as this can do more harm than good..
buy a decent case with large but silent cooling fans

CPU's are rated to about 70C, you should get the bios to warn you if the CPU goes over 70..

make sure you have plenty of circulation around the back of the case..
