It's that wide angle lens of yours I covet, Bear. But does it come with those lovely pictures built in?

What I think with be very interestin was instead of just putting the money we've spent in our gear, would be trying to figure it out (at least people that plans to earn some money with photography) when you will get the money back or the gear paid by your photographs.

For example I always loved photograpy and at my best friend wedding a saw a "professiona" photographer do such a bad work that I thought: darn! I can do better, so why can't I take advantage of this?

And I bought some gear in leasing and some with chash. I opened a business account, onned activity as a photographer and sarted my "part-time job".

I've bought in leasing (3 years) and I'm still paying for it (for mor 1 1/2 years):
2x D70
2x SB800
1x Nikkor 50mm f1.8
1x 70-300mm
2x 18-70 DX
2x Lowepro Stealth reporter aw
4x 1GB card

This was about $7000. Guess I've payed for half to this day.

The I bought with money:
Laptop $1200
Sigma 105mm macro $600
Sigma 30mm f1.4 $450
Lowepro MiniTrecker $100
Printer, paper and ink 400$

More 2300$ more or less.

So I've spent about 6000$ and have about 200$ in the banck. So I got more or less my 6000$ back in one and half year period. Hope in one more year finish the hole payment of the leasing.

Good point. I don't think we get quite those reds with our sunrises, and I KNOW we don't have that really cool body of water over which to shoot. Well, there's that gulf thing, but it ain't the same and it's a long drive from here....

My question is "How much do you have in Photography"

Oh my child that is chump change. I think I dropped that much on memory cards. LOL

But seriouslly there is a reason I am no longer married, I can't afford it since I took up the "inexpensive" art (no processing costs, right) of digital photography. However what has come my way as a result of it is priceless.

Thank god I have a day job so I can pay my bills.

Oh and bottom line last three years? $10,000.00 Somebody stop me!

In the past 3 years I have sold 2 new four wheelers with the trailer and 2 Canondale mountain bikes to buy camera equipment. Add that to the cash and we're at about $15,000.00 .

Here is the list that I did for my insurance agent-SONY F707, SONY F828, NIKON D70 kit, NIKON D200, MB 200 GRIP, BOGEN tripod, Bogen pistol grip ball head, Markins ball head, Tamarac Cyber six pack, HP computer, Canon i9900 printer, CS2, Nikon Capture, Neat Inmage, 4 San Disk memory cards, 2 SONY Memory Sticks, SB 600 flash w/ Lightsphere 2, card reader, an extra battery for each camera, 70-200 VR 2.8, 50mm 1.8, 105 micro 2.8, Kenko extension tubes, NIKON TCIIe teleconverter, WhiBal card, Greytag Mcbeth monitor calibrator, Moose filter, IR filter, 4 UV Haze filters, iPOD photo, Simplex mat cutter with circle cutter and V groove cutter, Bogen monopod.

And this doesn't include mat board, paper, ink, sensor cleaning kit, blower, books, magazines... You get the idea.

But like I tell my wife- "It's Okay because I have made almost $1500.00" of it back selling my work. :) I guess I'm not a very good business man.

I am not discouraged though if I just buy a 400mm prime, a Wimbley Sidekick and a carbon fiber tripod, and a 12-24mm, and a D2X, and some studio lighting I am sure I'll get rich. Right?

Either way it has been a fun, rewarding, and exciting 3 years.

Going back to what Nick said about saving collectables than moving to photography. I started out receintly (3-4 years back) collecting antiques. Our living room has from a 1918 Victrola, a 30's radio to a working 1951 TV to several goodies here and there. Filled the room up. Still looking for more! Got alittle bored moved on to collecting Hamilton electric watches of the 50's and 60's. Buying and selling on Ebay. Built up a entire room where I have all types on old and garbage watches. Equipment to repair them and so forth. Got bored with that (for now). Wanta buy a a watch? Then I ran in to DPC. Oh MY! Started out with a little 3.1 mp P&S, Now a E300. Looking forward to next camera.
I am small potatoes on what I have spent however I see no end. I sell stuff on Ebay, watches and stuff, then spend it on camera stuff.
