It's that first $25 for membership that starts the horrible slide... it doesn't sound like much, right? $25 a year? But oh, it doesn't stop there.. there's props, gas, more gas, gear, more gear, a new body, new lenses, more props, more gas...
I think, no I KNOW my spending on camera stuff has exceeded my spending on bike stuff. And you know what that means? Time for a new bike. :-) |

no kidding, my wife and I spend at least $15 a week on stuff for the challenges and most of the time we don't even use those photos. I spent $10 on ice last weekend for an urban legend pic. put the ice in the water which was two warm, making the ice melt right away. and of course I didn't even enter that challenge:( $15 a week adds up to $780 a year! |

A disturbing amount. :-).
Since I converted to Digital in November '04 and 'got back into' Photography I've spent the thick side of $25k (NZ, about $12k US) on gear. Some of it junk I've since sold, but you tend to collect junk in this game.
Still, as some other people have said, its a lot cheaper than some other hobbies, and it's easier to get insurance than motorsports. :-).
On the up side, I've made some (maybe half) of that back through paid jobs, and at the current rate I'll be finance free (I've sold my soul for lenses) in a year or so just off income from photography. So it's an almost self-suffitiant hobby for me.
Luckily I'm not a serious gear-head, if I were I'd have trouble paying the mortgage! Although a 1 series body is not far away, I can feel it in my bones. :-).
Cheers, Chris Hellyar.

You are paranoid! It is more likly that the stuff will be stolen in a "random" burgurlery (sp) than someone from this site going over the forums seeing this thread and then planning a robbery!
I have about $3500 worth usually in my trunk ;-0

It would be interesting to know what the combined total is for all DPC members. I bet it's a hefty chunk of change.

I am cheap. I have spent zero in the last 2 years. I have never bought a lens other then the one that came with the D70 kit.
I may buy something soon though. Maybe. :) |
