What is it with people people who tirelessly promote their stock referrals here on DPC and try to make money off people who are new to the world of stock photography or photography in general while not contributing anything to DPC?

All they do is watch someone mention stock (they probably have robots to scan the word stock mentioned on DPC) and it's the only time you see them with their list of referrals. Is that OK?

All they show is their hunger for money. Why is this seen OK while some threads are locked because someone mentions the new stock experience and the referral and SC are suddently worried about the thread being flooded with more referrals?

Why can't some people post their one referral and why is some people's multiple referrals accepted?

Melking should pay me for looking at her blinking ads! Information is one thing, blatant vertical marketing is something you should pay for.

I don't really know that I've seen anyone on DPC that fits that description...

Well I really don't know what to say....
I am not the type to be going off on the forums. But you know what I have been at DCP since 2003 and then I had allot of time to be on here all day long. I never did answer many questions about Photography because I don't really know very much about it...I am still learning. But Stock is something I am very into right now, so I am trying to help people I can. I did not start this topic. Just trying to help where I can. I don't have all day to be on here. I am a stay at home mom with two kids 5 and 3 months old and work at home 30 hours a week plus I do the whole wife thing too. Maybe I should just stay away from DPC and not post here anymore....I was only trying to help!

I am really sorry. I woke up this morning regretting what I had said. Please accept my apologies. Last night wasn't the time for me to post anything.

Well, there is more to it than meets the eye, Istock has rejected all of my shots in an attempt to join. It seems the bar is pretty high now and I have one "last chance" as they say to get it right in sending three photos for review.

have you posted here to run it past some people who have gotten into iStock or others?

They really like simple colors, exposed brightly, and cleanly composed. Usually you'll need some crop room, or allow for text to be placed in strategic areas.

Post back here, and maybe some members more knowledgeable about it than I can help you choose the best ones. I've been told that once you get in, it's easier to enter stuff that you like.

What is the Istock payment structure like?

They sell the following file sizes at the rates posted:

small ($1)
med ($3)
lrg ($5)
xl ($10)
xxl ($20-40)

Non-exclusive photographers earn 20% on each download. Exclusives earn 25-50% I believe, depending on their "level" ie, how many downloads they have to date. The minimum level is bronze for those with between 500 and 2500 downloads.

For what it's worth, my 8mp camera only supports s/m/l files, no xl or xxl. I've been exclusive until recently, and my average download has been netting about sixty cents.

Should I be embarrassed to ask what the difference is between microstock and macrostock...?

Microstock sites pay pennies (20c perphaps) to the photog when someone buys an image. Macrostock pay dollars, often hundreds per image.

there are other differences, but that's the basic dividingline.

Ahh, clearer now. Thank you.

How long does the initial approval take for "iStockphoto"?

Since they have to approve every single picture posted (at least that's what I read somewhere.) how long does it take for new ones to come online?

Can't you upsize?

I thought that most stock was done with upsized images with like 50MB TIFF's or something...?
07/09/2006 12:24:05 PM · #48
Microstock sites tend to explicitly forbid upsizing (probably because they find it easier than trying to explain to thousands of people how to upsize properly)

As far as I know, Shutterstock do the upsizing themselves, though they do allow users to upsize a maximum of 5% to reach their minimum size requirement. As the other sites I belong to, no upsizing is done - the higher the resolution of your camera, the more sizes are available.

I don't have much uploaded, but added up, Microstock has paid for my *ist DS.
