How do the get togethers usually pan out that are put together by people on this site? What's worked, what hasn't. How much planning is usually involved? Some have models, some don't... what's up with that? Anybody have success/disaster stories?

We had a GTG in Frankenmuth, MI a few months back. Di planned it, and we all met up, and just cruised around, shooting a lot, checking out the sites and having fun. It was a total blast. I think everybody there enjoyed it. We had a nice dinner at Zendhers, and played around with a duck!
Here are some shots

We've had three GTGs here in Oregon that I know of, and they were all a lot of fun. In fact, I think it's about time for another one. :D

You can find lots of threads about GTGs by searching the forums.

more shots from the fore-mentioned MI GTG.

The gtg's are mostly informal gatherings of DPC addicts who wish to get crazy together. I'm trying to organize one now for October 14th/15th in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We have some really nice fall colors that time of year. You can check it out here: OCT 14th / 15th GTG

I organised the first 5 London GTGs for DPC before asking for someone to do the next one and others have now organised a number more.

The first one was one of the earliest DPC GTGs (I'm talking about ones organised openly on the board for anyone to attend rather than ones arranged off-board by people who had originally met on the board) and that first time it was quite hard drumming up interest - I think people felt nervous about how online shared interests would translate into real life commonality.

That GTG was smaller but lots of fun and once the reports and pics were posted there was suddenly a lot more interest for more GTGs all over!

What are the main problems organising?

Narrowing down date isn't too hard - I tend to post 3 or 4 potential dates and ask interested parties to let me know all dates they can do. I usually set a date by which I'll choose the winning date and simply base it on which date most people can do. That way there are no hurt feelings on date chosen.

Venue choice can be hard as there are so many varied interests but usually it's just a case of asking for ideas in the organisation thread and looking into which ones work best and are most popular. We've been to places like Greenwich, Covent Garden, Docklands, Camden Market and walks along the Thames path and more.

On one recent GTG I organised the logistics of choosing a venue were harder than usual as we had one member who uses a wheelchair and wanted to make sure our chosen destination was wheelchair friendly and could be reached by car since trains and tube stations in London involve too many stairs to be feasible for a wheelchair user. We settled on Kew Gardens and it worked really well.

Another issue not to overlook is whether permissions are required for photography. You'll often find that whilst one visitor with a camera is overlooked security show a lot more interest in a group of photographers, often with at least as much equipment as professionals if not more! Some venues will require advance permission being obtained and will also restrict usage of resulting images.

Personally, if you're doing a walking tour of a busy city area, especially one involving trips on local transport, I'd suggest keeping the group a reasonable size otherwise too much of the day is spent trying to keep everyone together and waiting for scragglers rather than actually talking and shooting. 5 to 10 works well, up to 15 is just about manageable, 20 is difficult unless you're in an enclosed and quieter location such as Kew Gardens.

On most GTGs I've organised we've met at a cafe/ restaurant for lunch and then gone on to do some shooting together. On the recent Kew Gardens GTG I organised a picnic. Based on attendance numbers I worked out a price, made a list of items and did delegate responsibility for buying and bringing some items to others in the group. However, I was still responsible for collecting/ distributing money.

Oh and same applies (sorting money) if you're going somewhere with an entrance fee and taking advantage of group discounts. I asked in advance for people to make sure they not only had enough cash but had it in CHANGE!

Hope that helps!

I have two words to say when it comes to any GTG done at night - herding cats :o) I organised the 6th London GTG last year, and we did a walk along the Thames at dusk->night. However, with lotsa people, tripods, and darkness, it was impossible to keep track of where everyone is, and we ended up being strung out over at least half a mile. I also had to arrange shooting permits at at least two locations, but incorrectly estimated the travelling time between them, and we ended up turning up at the 2nd place about 2 hours after the official permit times (luckily there was no-one around to challenge us then!). So my advice would be to keep times & distances realistic, and make sure that everyone knows where the next meetup point is, should you all get seperated.

I've been to one GTG in DC which was a blast. Blemt and the others did a great job putting that together.

And we've had several smaller, local GTG's here in and around Atlanta and they are always a fun time. No real big planning for those though. No models involved, just local sites. I'd like to try to plan some kind of studio shoot/model type GTG though. KevinRiggs and I have discussed trying to get some sort of Shootout together but that'll take some real planning. Maybe someday. :)
