My cat knocked my camera off my desk and landed on my tile floor. Yikes, I know. Well the camera seems fine and I THINK the lens is fine however the polarizer I have screwed on is damaged (cracked lines all over it) and I can't get it off my lense. The problem is the thread part got pushed in a bit and won't unscrew. I can turn the polarizer part but not unscrew it. Anybody know of a trick for removing it? I'd like to see if the glass in my lens (17-40L) is still good.

Oh btw, the cat is hanging by it's tail out in the yard. (j/k) :P

ETA: It's a B+W 77 SLIM Circular Polarizer MRC. It's cracked all over but the glass itself still feels solid which is weird. It is the filter that is cracked because it moves around as I move the polarizer part.

You need a filter wrench.

Remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey.

Thanks. I'll see if they have one at a local shop here. I hate that it's a thin filter because it's so hard to grip as it is.

You don't really need a special wrench. An elastic band (one of the wide ones) will let you get a good enough grip.

If the PL filter is already history, all you need is a simple thin-bladed screwdriver (or butter knife), inserted between the stationary and rotary rings, twist and separate them (break off outer ring). Then if you have a rubber kitchen gadget used to unscrew stuck jar lids, use that to twist off the part stuck on the lens. Any rubberized sheet / chunk of innertube / silicon oven mitt, etc. will work to grip it well.

Ok, I finally got it off. Thanks for the suggestion. Well lens is fine except for the filter thread. Looks like I won't be using any more filters on it. :(

Duct-tape, totally.

Here's the cat that knocked it on the floor. And no it's not getting it's other leg back. So it can cry all he wants.

Also j/k.
